I am going to rip the carpet out. Itds old, dead and dirty. I tried to steam clean it to no avail so I am going to replace it. What have you used with best results? I was thinking of commercial grade so it lasts a bit longer and holds up but I figured you have better ideas. Right now it seems to have a beige colored pile style carpet. Something you'd have in your living room. It was no good before I got the boat but after a very long repower and a lot of wood stripping on the exterior I made it even worse!

Whatever you do, do not use berber. I had bad luck with it as it un-ravels at the cut area for hatches, and did not wear well at all. For smaller areas I most prefer having the carpet cut to fit, then having it professionally bound. Makes for easy in and out for service issues. Jim Rosenthal just had his carpet redone on his 36C and it looks great. Maybe he will chime in here and tell you what his carpet is and how it was done.

Ditto on the berber. I have the same problem at the hatches at the corners. Unravelling!

I have been thinking about a removable, bound carpet across the salon on our 37. The last installer stapled it and it is a PITA.

I have berber, but they put those metal edges on all of the hatches. It was that way when I bought the boat, so until it is time for new carpet, I'll just leave it that way. But, I guess that the edging keeps the carpet from unraveling since I don't have that problem. I don't like the looks of the edging, but I seems to help. The other problem is that not ALL of the hatches were cut out. I would rather have standard pile carpet, no edging, and cut out for
ALL of the hatches. On our last boat we did it that way and the ones that you rarely get into, you wouldn't even know they were there.

If you have not looked at Amtico Yet give it a try , I love the stuff , Used Amtico on all the floors then used a Berber with bound edges at the hatches .

Lonseal now makes a sheet vinyl teak and holly which looks as good as the Amtico and probably easier to install as well.

Plasteak also now makes the Teak and Holly Sheet Vinyl .

Use NYLON carpet fabric, not wool, not polyester. I've never glued nor fastened wall to wall carpet it's small enough areas on a boat the stay in place. I like one large cut out for all four hatches in my salon vs four individial cutouts with narrow sections between hatch cutouts...You can also staple with stainless or monel staples if that becomes necessary...as on steps...just push the staple gun down into the weave before injecting the staple...nothing shows in a typical pile carpet...

Here is a side thought for you. I had our carpet removed with the agreement that they would install the new carpet three days later. After they removed the old stuff I rolled a heavy coat of West epoxy with their foam roller on the plywood. I think it is a good idea to get some waterproffing stuff on that wood just in case someone spills a bucket of water, or whatever, on the carpet.

I have had Blue Note carpeted three times (which over 14 years is not too bad). Some suggestions:
-nylon only like he said. Medium short pile and as dense as you can get.
-have the hatches routed at the edges so the carpet can be folded down and stapled, that way the edges don't fray
-they will fit tight, so install sturdy hardware to pull them up- bronze or SS rings are good
-have the excess made into runners for high-traffic areas, that will save on wear and tear where you can't avoid walking
-dark colors are best. Also patterns show less dirt, but then the runners look weird.

i got commercial grade carpet, very pleased with it. got it from a high dollar carpet supply company, bought a remnant. paid 6/yd instead of 40/yd. have enough to do whole boat again. i made paper template then took it to a guy to cut it and bind it. came out very nice. i also got a 1/8" thick piece of vinyl and laid it down under the carpet, it absorbs a lot of sound.

Steve, did you carpet under the lounge or just up to it? I have been thinking about carpet, but the current vinyl covering still looks pretty good.

I recently replaced my hatt 36 carpet with a carpet tile product I bought at Home Depot. It comes in a variety of colors, I picked beige, and the tiles are integrated, meaning, a semi sticky backing, padding and carpet are compressed into one tile. It cuts easily, does not get glued or stapled down and once in place is seamless. When you want to get in the hatches simply pull up the one or two tiles that give you access and away you go. When finished pop the tiles back in and rub the seams with your hand and it disappears. Worth looking at, I won't use anything else again. Oh, and when the kids or guests spill something on it, pop in a new one.

George, i put the carpet up to it. it is not attached to deck, just lays there. binding was not that expensive.
I am however going to re do the salon as we need to cut in 3 pieces, makes it easier to access engine room, right now it is in 2 pieces. make the center piece slightly wider than the middle deck hatches. Aso going to glue the vinyl to the back of the carpet to make it easier.

Thanks. I probably will do that when (and if) I enclose the back. Just had new canvas backdrop and windshield covers made this summer. The old backdrop was 13 years old.
