  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series II (1981 - 1984)
I'm taking out my electronic controls and going back to manual cable controls. I have a 46c Series II anyone know how long the cables need to be?

why are you switching back?

I'm interested to hear ocburger's answer to this. I've run boats with both mechanical and electronic controls and I prefer mechanical by a large margin. I find electronic way too sensitive with poor feed back.

I develop computer systems in a complex environment. We have one of everything. Unless a system is practically bullet-proof, I generally prefer relay logic, e.g. a simple bilge level switch, a the starter on our old DD's, etc., to electronics. The direct mechanical controls I like even better. My first Mercedes had heater controls that were a wire directly connected to an actual water valve. How simple.

So I absolutely relate and agree with your effort to return mechanical controls.

It would be another thread, but the US is extremely exposed, off the scale in my opinion, in terms of the degree to which our society is dependent on digital systems. We may suffer a Black Swan event sometime in our country and, no, not the movie...the book. Sorry if I hi-jacked the thread.

They got wet. They have been have been gone over but now I don't trust the reliability. I don't want to be messing around with these controls for the next year instead of enjoying my boat. They will probably be fine but nothing can go wrong with manuals. For $650 peace of mind.

Based on my experience with this a few years ago, I would recommend Panish controls for your new controls and cables. I had excellent service from them and their products are extremely well made. Probably ten years old now, and look and work like new. They make their own cables, or used to.

I have Panish on my 70 ft and they are great.very dependable.

When I replaced the controls (original Morse Twin SR) I had quite a bit of work to do- install new controls AND figure out all the cable lengths etc, because the engines had been changed and the original lengths weren't working right (AND the old cables were all screwed up from rust etc) Rob Panish was really outstanding in helping me get everything working right. I can't recommend them highly enough. Small company, a person answered the phone, fair prices- just terrific.
