There are times I swear at the builders of my boat, but today isn't one of them.
With land fuel reaching $3.50/gal around here (Diesel) due to the freaking hurricanes, I've been catching up on some of the items in the log - routine check stuff.
Like, for example, alignment.
I haven't had the couplers split in almost four years. Did it about a year after I bought the boat, it was within 3-4 thousandths, buttoned it back up.
Just got done with the port side again. Now this is almost four years later.
It was out by six thousandths laterally, and near-zero (within a thousandth) vertically.
That's not worth dorking with - I buttoned it up again.
This winter if I get bored I may take the time to zero it, but it'll be tough getting closer to "dead-nuts on" than it already is. Six thousandths is within the tolerance of "straight" for the shaft, as that's about a thousandth at the shaft's radius (the coupler is of course much larger in diameter)
Guys, I've worked on a LOT of pleasure boats over the years. I've yet to see one that will hold alignment like this - 20 year old mounts and engine bearers - over FOUR YEARS and closing on 1000 hours - its still in alignment.
My hat is off - really.
Thanks Hatteras.....
