Hatteras Model
74' COCKPIT MY (1995 - 1999)
I understand that the 75' Glendinning shore power cords are getting stiff and are difficult for the Glendinning motor to retrieve on one side. The cables themselves work just fine. Is there any cleaner or other type chemical that I can use to refresh the cords so they are easier to bend and retrieve by the Glendinning. Replacing each cord seems excessive for what is going on. Thanks.

Copper gets brittle with age and flexing. If that's the culprit nothing will change that.

If its the outer casing you need to determine it's cause (age, heat, chemical treatment) and then look for a solution .

If used often 15 years or so is good for the cables.

I suspect that these are the original cables from 1996. Gelndinning quoted about $1,100 excluding shipping for new cables. Is there a bulk supplier worth contacting for 150 feet of cables?

It's not the cable, the tension rollers need to be adjusted. You can adjust the friction on the rollers per Glen instructions. If you don't have the installation manual/instructions on the boat, they are available on the Glen site.

Wow Mike. That would be a great solution.

A few years back I had to replace one of the cables. Turned out they didn't use tinned wire and a chunk was heavily corroded about 15' from the end even though the copper was good at the plug

I got 75' of 50amp cable from ward electric (big marine electric place in FTL) ,tinned for ... I forgot but it was like $600/700

I have an issue with the 100amp glen on the lazzara though.. it works but needs to be helped sometimes ... I need to get the manual to see how it can be adjusted

Thanks Pascal. Still hoping to avoid springing for new cables when they are working fine.

See, now how do you expect this forum to get along without you?

I have this same issue and have decided to switch the cords end for end . The plug will have to be re done but that will put the old cord which the pulley doesn't like in the bucket and the new good cable outside. It becomes a diameter issue with the cable so yes you can adjust the "pinch " in the pulley but the pulley just cant grab that oxidized old jacket on the weather worn cable as well anyhow...........Pat

Thanks Pat. That is another great idea.

On our 53MY the original cables/cable master were installed by the dealer, Hatteras of Lauderdale, when the boat was delivered to the first owner in 1980. Those cables are still in place. I suspect that the Glenn roller tension adjustment will have no trouble dealing with the cable, regardless of it's age/condition.

Of course, if someone treated the cables with Armor-All or some other inappropriate dressing, it might be too slippery to function properly. ;)

If that's the case, I'd bet that cleaning the cable with naphtha will resolve the problem.

Try EZ strip, the stuff is magic on electrical cords, if you use it make sure you rinse with fresh water right after using. Others on this site recommended it and they were right. Does not make the cord slippery. John

I had trouble with one of mine reeling in and the trouble was that it was getting twisted up in the barrel over time. I had to have someone help on the outside as I pulled and untwisted the cable in the forward stateroom! Once the entire length was out, I unwound it on the dock. I ran it in and out several times, untwisting it each time. Now it works just fine! With age and over time they take on a twist and can be a bear to get them to work properly. I too thought I was going to have to replace the cable and talked to Wards Marine, which had the best price I could find. I had cut several feet off the end of the cord to get too good wire and thought I would have to replace the cable to get back to a proper length. Once I dragged it all out I had plenty! It was just fighting to get in and out!
