  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1977 - 1980)
I have removed the thick interior caulk from my fixed aft deck windows (I have a fully enclosed aft deck). It was a rubbery product that stayed flexible for decades. Two questions:

Should I install new window tint before or after the new caulk?

What’s the best product? It’s a very thick application - 1/2” x 5/8” so I will probably need 5 or 6 tubes and I don’t want shrinkage. I have seen recommendations for Glaze Ease 601 and BoatLife Lifeseal.

Take a look at Dow 995 structural silicone. A friend used it with good results. YMMV.

Thanks for posting this. I have a related question that I’ve been putting off for too long. The sealing material on two of my fixed windows runs black with even the mildest soaps. So I know it’s degrading. Any clue what it might be? Anything to be done other than dismount the windows and start over? One of my side windows measures nearly 10’, so it’ll have to be a glass company job. Trouble is window was replaced five years ago and it’s the worst streaker. Thoughts?

It’s actually Dow 795, it is the stuff that is used to install the glass in high rise buildings. My glass guy uses it exclusively both on my humble boat and on mega yachts. John

Always check the expiration date on the tubes. It has a limited shelf life.
It does work great.

Yes. My bad. Fat fingers! There is a 995 product too but 795 is what my friend had used on his 43 DC.

The 995 has better specs and comes in black. I assume it’s not paintable so I need to repaint the frames first.

Back to the first question - should I have the window tint film installed first? I want a dark tint. Unless the caulk covers the film there will likely be gaps. But I wonder if the caulk will affect the film.

I would say caulk after- if you ever need to change he tint you don't want to have to recaulk the window...
