Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Finally threw in the towel today on my month long pending Hatteras purchase. After multiple delays trying to get the survey done due to a series of issues - weather, mechanical, and more - the seller announced they would not extend the contract at the same price. As I understand it, they want me to agree that if I close, I will pay for the investigation and likely repair of the latest mysterious leak causing the delays. While I would not rule out paying for certain repairs, and I know well the cost of getting into a new boat, I won't just flip the switch for repairs on a boat that I do not own, by a yard that I do not know, where I cannot monitor and control the work being done. Am I wrong?

The owner does not seem to care that I am walking, which tells me they prob have a better offer on the backside. It's an interesting situation from a legal/contracts perspective speaking as a lawyer, but I'm not going there. Prob best to just walk away because this isn't fun anymore. But something in my gut tells me that someone's brother-in-law is now going to get my boat at my price.

Keep in mind.....Boating should be fun, including the buying experience. I believe you probably did the right thing. Keep walking, I'm sure you will find another boat, probably in better condition and a better price. "Good things come to those who wait"

Was this the 43'? Are you in Charleston? I think I remember talking to you about it but forgot. I have the same story but the opposite happend, the buyer walked, but I was the seller. I thought the contract kept the buyer and seller on the hook once the deal was made. Thats what we pay the brokers for. Not any fun, your right. I still would like to give you a tour of mine.

I learned the hard way, over and over again, that when the voice in your head tells you to walk...don't argue.

There's lots of good stuff out there. Something better is just around the next bend.

If your not having fun and the experience isn't feeling like it should, walk. There are hundreds of boats out there with your name on it. Remember the two best days are the day you buy and the day you sell. Have fun and make it memorable.

Be careful with that quote. I repeated it recently to a dock neighbor who was selling his boat. In the discussion, found out he and his wife both have been diagnosed with cancer which was precipitating the boat sale among other life changes. He said selling was one of the saddest days of his life. Gulp.

The day I bought mine was a nerve racking day that I wasnt sure what in the world I was doing. I felt I was being played by everyone involved. I went in blind as a bat. The bank hassled me as well as the insurance Company. There was unseen cost at every turn in the road. After the first 6 months when I got adjusted I then was able to enjoy the boat. Now that I'm selling the boat I will be really sad on that day we sell. We still love our 43 MY and take pride in it and will keep cruising it as usual. I disagree with the 2 most happiest days.

Hey, maybe you'll find that dream deal that's waiting around the corner for you. Like that Porsche barn find everyone talks about.

That Porsche in the barn is the only kind of boat I buy...

Maybe. If anyone knows of one, let me know. While price is always an issue, but I'm a bit of a nut about original - like things as they were designed, especially a Hatteras. I don't like most of the "improvements" folks do to them, and certain don't want to pay for something that I don't even like.

For now, I'm thinking of skipping the boat and the Porsche ... just find a barn in the mountains somewhere and give up boating .... as Pate said above seems like there is always a hassle/hussle.

It's not always fun. My recent purchase took 3 months. At times it seemed there was something going on behind the scenes, better offer etc. As it turned out the seller simply had other things on his mind and was slow to respond to anything. Frustrating , but patience paid off. In the final hour I found another boat with the intent of purchasing it that day. Made one final attempt with the original boat and got it at half the original ask price. Perhaps I was different from you, in that I knew what I wanted.

There's so many hassles about boat ownership. I cant even seem to buy a LED light bulb for the sundeck without struggling to find the correct size, colors, lumins etc. Then when the bulb get mailed to me its the wrong bulb. Thats nothing compared to dock fees, insurance, zinks, hurricanes, bad fuel, keeping the isenglass clean, Taxes, registration, etc, etc, etc. Theres something to be said by getting a hunk of junk and not even maintaining it except the engine. You can party with the best of them and anchor out just like everyone else. I wouldnt look for a Porcshe. I'd look for a Chevy Impala thats a daily driver that runs good but looks like crap and have a good time. No worries. I am a worry wart cant you see. Ive also been called OCD too. Thats why I am having a hard time keeping our boating looking good, well at least up to my expectations. Youll find one you like.

Given that you maintain nuclear plants (right?) being OCD might be a good thing for all of us.

I generally know what I want, which is why I can act fast when I find it - like here. I was fair, quick and trying to buy it.

As for last minute - one boat purchase involved agreeing to a term while I was in line at the bank for the cashier's check - no lie.

hi we also had an issue when we were looking for a Hatteras to buy we went to see a 1981 56' MY in
Lighthouse Point Fl. the broker was very nice after looking we made an offer that was $25.000 less
then asking cause we didn't know anything about Hatteras except that my friend owned one and we
loved ti the boat was all original including all the Electronics, they did not accept our offer so we went back and took our friend to give us a better understanding of the boat ,we then made a full price offer
after our friend said the boat was a good boat and we were told by the broker that the seller now wanted more then the asking price we were very disappointed with the seller and we walked away...it did make us Love the 56' MY with the wide beam cause we originally were looking at 53' MY but after my wife saw the wide beam 56' MY was it....we finally bought 1981 56' MY in NC that was in much better
we LOVE our boat....we have been upgrading it ever since we bought it....lol

I too have toured a 56 wide body and it was a perfect boat in every way. We had horse derveys anchored in Silver lake on Ocracoke Island, NC. Thats Georges old boat if thats the one. I cant imagine what your updating though. Even my daughter said she almost threw up after touring his engine room. Ha Ha, the envy of wanting a stand up engine room.

Similar thing happened to me back in July when I went to purchase the Blue Sky in Georgetown South Carolina. Flew down twice, had engine surveys and hull surveys done, only for the owner to get those reports and have sellers remorse. Owner was a car salemen, so I figure this is how he operates.
run if it doesn't seem right. The issue I have is the standard sales agreements, do not protect the buyer at all.
BTW, as you can see, I have no issue throwing him under the bus.

Sorry about the empty picture. It was supposed to have two hatteras MY's sitting out there. I beg to differ on the sales agreements. I had a buyer sign an agreement on the sell of our boat on the contingency that I would wait 1 month in florida to help him drive the boat to NC. So I waited 1 month and he wasnt satisfied at the sea trail. I could tell he wasnt his happy self. He blamed the engines not spooling up to correct rpm and walked. I since (fixed) calibrated the engines (fuel injector pump issue) with a quick 1 hr of labor. Our broker said we couldnt hold him to the contract. I dont know the particulars but I can say sometimes the seller gets shafted. In that one month time frame I might could have sold the boat but I waited. Live and learn, but the contracts are written to protect the broker in my opinion.
