  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
42' LRC - Mark II (1980 - 1985)
Hi,
I bought a 42 lrc last summer and would want to get the ACs to work on the Genset or Shorepower, both providing 220v 50hz. As I live in Norway, no cooling should be needed, but I'ld very much like the heat they should also be able to provide. I've got the original huge blue Jefferson converter still hooked up, but it doesn't fix the hz, only the voltage? Any tips?

Thanks
Kristian

Call Hatteras. They have shipped many new boats overseas over the years. They will tell you what your options are.

You Don't need to change the Frequency .

On the ac unit. The genny gets set for 50 hz by changing the rpm. It loses 20% of its wattage too.

You can probably get a manual from the Cruisair website. you can operate their equipment on 50hz but it states that the "rated capacity is reduced by 17%"

Thanks for the replies!
I asked Cruisair (Dometic) support as well and they gave this response:
"Hello, Sorry to say their is no easy fix, the compressors that are installed in our equipment or either designed to run at 50hz or 60hz, they do not run on both. You would be looking at changing out the compressor and electrical components in order to change from 60z to 50hz. I would suggest getting an authorized Dometic Cruisair / Marine Air dealer on board to advise on estimate for you to change out the equipment. Thank you "

So I should probably call Hatteras then...

Has anyone gotten theirs to work on different frequencies? If so - what did you do? :-)

best regards
Kristian

btw, the problem I have is that I cannot get the compressors to start. They just "buzz", just like the sound when you prevent an electric motor in running... not a nice sound. The previous owner said they would work if he banged them with a screwdriver - not my preferred operation mode in the long run though (and I've never managed to start them myself)

Is there a way to alter the frequency on the Jefferson?

Check the start cap.

You cannot change the frequency of the Jefferson, but you can connect it for 50 hz operation. I don't know if your jefferson is the same as mine but I have a diagram that might be helpful. On my diagram it says,
"for 50 hertz operation"
disconnect H3 & H4 leads and tape ends.
connect H2 to 859,#6W
connect H5 to 859,#8Gn
connect jumper between H2 & H5
Jefferson electric cat - # 211-001-078

I tried to add diagram without success.

Thanks again for your hjelp guys, much appreciated!
I'll try to get in touch with Hatteras, as pointed out, this is not the first Hatt in Europe... The frequency converter might do the trick. Doesn't look cheap though...
Nevertheless, it feels great to be part of the community in here :-)
