Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
Hi All. so the wife and i have been talking more about the hatt (i.e. me trying to figure out the hesitation lol). Evidently a lot of it has to do with the galley being down on the 58 YF. She does not like this and wants a galley up model. After I tell her how much I appreciate her acceptance of the fact that she will spend most of the time on the boat in the galley cooking me tasty meals and then my subsequent ducking quickly to avoid the frying pan to the head tactic, I cannot find the 58 YF or even the 53 YF with galley up. I know the 58 MY has the galley up but I think that is just more boat than we want at the moment. To my knowledge hatt never made a 53 or 58 YF with the galley up. Any hatt experts know if this is in fact the case? What other galley up models has hatt made in the past that offer the open cockpit like the YF models?

Thanks!

Seems logical for the swabbie to agree with an admiral !! My 58TC has the galley down and it BLOWS!! Carry stuff to the boat, climb up 6 feet, carry stuff forward 40 feet and down 2 sets of narrow steps. What WERE they thinking. My galley doesnt have a portlite either--its a cave !! When I reconfigure HATT TRICK I will have a galley up with BIG windows to let the lite stream in while I prepare the fois gras. LOL The present galley will become a computer room / den / private cabin for guests with an ensuite head for THEIR privacy as well.

Hatteras did not make a 53MY or 58YF with a galley up. You'll need to get into the 58MY galley up model for that (like the one listed in Knoxville, TN), or perhaps one of smaller Hatteras models in the 40-50 foot range - I think some of those may have had some galley up arrangements. The 58MY came in two versions (I'm talking about the Series I run) - galley up with 4 staterooms/4 heads and the galley down which is essentially like the 58YF or 53MY in term of layout, but you'd get a huge salon with wet bar directly behind the pilothouse.

If it's not too far away, you should call George, the broker on the 58MY in Knoxville, and go have a look just to get a personal feel for what the galley up model is, regardless of whether you want that big of a boat or not. When I was boat shopping, I looked at things that weren't really on my list just to get a feel for what was out there and to have a better understanding of the pros and cons of different layouts.

I love the space I got in my galley up because I have a very strong affection for the culinary arts (makes "I like to cook" sound fancy, doesn't it?). My galley is well stocked, perhaps too well stocked, but I'm not sure I could have gotten it all in with the galley down models.

I agree on this...the down galley is gloomy. On my boat there is no portlight; nor one for the head either. While I understand why they did this (the outside of the boat would be pretty busy with all those portlights in a thirty-six foot exterior) it would be nice to have some light in there...not happening without major refit, though.

I would try to find a galley-up boat, as you said. The only alternative would be to enlarge the windows in a galley-down boat- not at all practical. I think folks don't care to be stuck in a a down galley because they are also away from everyone else, which is sort of bleak as well.

Some have added a "skylight" in the galley on the 53/58 MY/YF. It was done in order to aide in removing the generator and/or galley appliances. I'm sure this really adds to the light in that area and may be an option if you are convinced that you have to own that model.

Look at 60' convertibles. Don't laugh until you've seen one in person.

Galley up with BIG windows, plenty of interior room, nice master, 3 staterooms/heads, fishing ability goes without saying, and they make surprisingly good cruisers with a big, heavy boat/any weather/anytime, Hatt ride. They're probably a bit more seaworthy in heavy weather than any of the motoryacht series.
The visibility from that high bridge is better than any motoryacht, line handling is a cinch, the dinghy stows easily on the foredeck, huge cockpit, huge engine room, 1600 gallons fuel.
The price seems to be competitive with the big motoryachts too, (58MY, anyway) and you can open the throttles and go fast if you want, once in a while. :D

My 36 is one of the few with a galley up (entire port side salon) and I LOVE IT. With the nice view the Admiral now makes sandwiches on fishing ventures :p

I had the Galley down in my 45C and liked it that way - and I was the one doing the cooking.

The key with a galley is that it has to be set up so you can actually move around in it when you're underway and not get killed, scalded or burned to a crisp from things flying around. This is difficult on many galley up boats, although its not impossible.

The smaller Hatts I've seen with the galley up don't really have a galley - its part of the salon. I don't care for that. I DID see a couple of Vikings that had a nice setup with the galley in the forward part of the Salon but still up, narrow enough to be able to brace and yet well thought-out - that I'd live with.

There are a lot of older 60Cs for sale on YW- I happen to like the open bridge version better, but if you include the enclosed bridge boats, the number is huge. It's worth considering- they have a LOT of interior room, they are well laid-out, and from all the reviews here, very seaworthy boats. A worthwhile alternative to a MY. Not only do they go faster, but it feels faster when you're fifteen feet up in the air on the fly bridge.

what if you simply add an open air galley on rear deck. 2 burner top, micorwave and small refer and sink. this will double as a bar.

I thought we were the ones laughing at them  .

The only thing I would like to have is a head and sink on the bridge. Oh, and a larger rod locker too. There is lots more room than you expect espc. with the enclosed bridge.

i really don't mind the galley down setup . you have 2 reasonable windows so you really dont' feel in a cave, it's jsut 6 steps down...

Angela's galley up is great but unless you are a gourmet chef (like she is) and plan on spending hours cooking, the galley down works very well.

galley up means enclosed pilot house which makes handling a little more intimidating since you dont have a great view aft.

also, on the 58MY, the galley up/pilot house means a significantly smaller foredeck and sunpad...

compromise, compromise...
