  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' MOTOR YACHT (1964 - 1968)
I need a new 12 KW generator.

Does anyone use a BETA or Nopro generator?

Any info on the BETA or Nopro.

We are in Charleston, SC

not familiar with Beta but i a have a 4 year old norpro 18 which i think is a great unit.

everything is fully accessible, the sound box is top quality yet easy to open for routine checks or remove completely for more serious work. the self bleeding injectors make it easy to replacing filters.

only problme in 2000+ hrs has been an oil pressure safety switch and water ingestion due to improper install but the prev. owner. had to pull the head (very easy) and replace a couple of valve.

and they are singificnatly cheaper than others...

Alot of the fishing boats out here use Norpro and a friend of mine replaced his onan with a Norpro. Never heard a complaint from any of them......

I would also look at Northern Lights, these are well engineered generators, and in my humble opinion the benchmark by which to judge the rest. They are pricey compared to some of the other brands, but you can get a good deal on one if you search.

I bought a 15 kw model norpro for 9500$ at the newport boat show two summers ago and put it in myself this winter. The model number is 15ny wich is the yanmar engine. parts are available at the local napa/car part etc. It is a ton quieter and smaller than my ohno i mean onan. The guy i bought from was joe demers at http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/ Mine has one hour on it and that was to test run and winterize. I looked for about a year and found this to be the best bang for the buck. = size/cost/warranty I will add though it is not one of those high teck gensets that put out ultr clean and electronic snsitive signals etc.

I'm with Chris on this. We are very happy with the Northern Lights unit we put in almost 2 years ago. What a change from the Onan! Quiet enough w/o sound shield - VERY quiet with one. Totally trouble free ops, with great starting in all temps. Nice clean power with little/no changes as loads kick in/out. Only complaint I have is the required head bolt torque after break in was a pain. I understand that they made that job easier on the 2006 models (mine small 6.5 KW) unit. Good Luck.
Regards, Bob K

Dive boat has an 8kw northern lights, my hat has a "newer" onan. The N.L. is both quieter, cleaner exhaust and more reliable, plus starts easier in the cold. Bill
