  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
My marina installed a new 15Kw Westerbeke generator. They put a new start switch in and left the old one on the panel. They didn't want to mess with the old one because it has several wires running to it. Has anyone removed the old switch and wondering what the implications would be. Also wondering if the old analog volt meter will still work. I haven't been to the boat to run it yet and would rather remove the old genny remote start switch.

Thanks,

Get a new mechanic. No reason it can't be removed. No reason to have to ask us what they did or didn't do..

Depends on how the old voltmeter is connected. Assuming you re talking about a VM for the generator battery, If connected directly to the battery or battery switch it should work, if it was connected thru the old gen it will probably not work

As to the old starter switch, it s bit odd that the installer didn’t remove the old switch and wiring. Usually that goes straight to the generator so unless someone at some point tapped into that for something also it should be easy to remove

on my boat when they did the repower the quote was to remove 2 detroits and install 2 john deeres, thats all the PO got. i guess removing all of the detroit wires and stuff would have added to the price, but it wasnt on the bid...took me a lot of hours to remove all of the old stuff not in use..

Me too. I ended up with enough wire to build another boat.

I think anyone who's owned an old boat for any length of time has a similar pile of wire around. I know I do.

Oh, I wish people removed old cable on my boat when removing old equipment. I running out of room in those flybridge tubes. Someday I going to loose it and cut the wrong thing out!

I was told they saw other wires connected to it and didn't want to risk messing something else up by taking it out . I will need to inspect when I am at the boat. Mark
