I have 1985 671 TIs, I am planning on replacing injectors and inspecting air boxes. I have a couple of questions:

Are interstates the best ? Vendor recommendations ? (I am in Michigan)
Is it mandatory to replace the airbox gaskets and valve cover gaskets ?
Is it mandatory to replace the fuel pipes too?

I recently attended the FDDA owners class in Ft. Lauderdale, great class, alot of information, excellent instructor - me and 8 coasties - all 25 years old - boy did they have some great stories, most days they were just sobering up at 8am, anyway,
the instructor said you MUST replace all gaskets and pipes.

Looking for the "informed forum's" take on this advise!

PS If any of you are considering the class, its well worth it, by the way, the instructor, who has been teaching a long time (he's 70) is planning on retiring next year. :-(

Injectors: I've not had problems with Detroit's PREMIUM Reliabuilts. That's all I will use from Detroit. Interstate is also supposed to be good.

Other questions:

1. Yes (airbox covers) and no (valve cover) unless it is damaged or "sticky" when you remove it, but if it leaks you'll obviously want to change it. Have an extra.
2. Fuel pipes. No for the O-ring style (change the O-rings however); IMHO the flare-style pipes are not mandatory BUT unless you were the last person to put them on and know they were PROPERLY torqued, I would. Fuel leaks suck, the pipes are not very expensive, and the flare ones are VERY subject to damage from being overtorqued.

Also - on the flare pipes in particular - if you intend to reuse mark the pipes so you know which end goes which way and which injector they came off of. This helps on the success rate if you intend to re-use.

Genesis:

What is your view on the conversion kits from flared fuel pipe to O ring, are they worth it? Any experience?

If you're going to change all the injectors and pipes, sure, why not? The extra cost is just the cylinder head "tower" pieces in that case.

If not I wouldn't do it. There's nothing wrong with the original design if you're not an ape.
