  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
I have raw water flush orig head giving me some trouble. The discharge pump loses prime and won’t drain the bowl. I replaced stator rotor and seal last week and still intermittently won’t flush.
Raz was helpful and suggested running a hose from discharge side to a bucket to isolate any plumbing issues. Three flushes went perfect then my problem returned on the 4th flush. If I remove the priming plug air escapes then seawater and I’m good for a few flushes then pump loses prime again. I did search here and didn’t find a resolution to my issue. I replaced the 3/8 hose on back of toilet also. This is the mid head and have a 3ft section of 2 3/8” hose from toilet to pump. There are no water leaks anywhere and all clamps are tight.

I had that issue. It turned out the lack of use caused toilet paper to harden in the hose. Water could not get through it. Had to replace the hose to the holding tank. You can remove the hose exiting the pump and add a 3 or 4 foot hose that goes into a bucket. Start flushing. This will tell you if the line is clogged. If it works you know your issue. Good luck.

We don’t flush TP so no chance of that and that head is used the most. I have the same intermittent problem going straight to a bucket. Maybe 4 out of 5 flushes are good, sometimes the second flush is bad and the third is ok, even if I wait any amount of time it doesn’t matter. I can see water flowing in the small hose behind head that supposed to help prime and flush. I’m stumped. I’m going to take everything on the pump apart to make sure it’s ok then I’m Gonna replace the big hose then the pvc plumbing.

A fresh stator AND rotor on both ends usually take care of all pumping issues ,,,, Less a discharge restriction.
However; that is unique no paper gets flushed...

Are you a %100 sure no “paper” was flushed?

The problem isn’t TP but minerals building up in the hoses eventually restricting flow. Why would you not flush TP anyway… can’t imagine having a waste basket with dirty TP.

It’s a habit that formed from my old boat and even so the discharge is straight from pump to a bucket with a new section of hose. Stator and rotor new also shaft seal. I replaced stator at the end of last season when problem started and it seemed to work ok until it didn’t. Two weeks ago I replaced everything with new hoping the old plastic rotor was the issue. After I replaced everything I got two or three good flushes then problem returned so I pulled the priming plug to let the air out til water flowed and I got a few flushes until I didn’t.

Sounds to me like blockage in the discharge hose. Couple of flushes fill up the hose then it eventually drains thru.

Regardless of head type, I ve seen cases of temporarily blockage due to the consistency of you know what :) which may not dissolve as quickly as TP especially with calcium build up

Even with fresh water, you will get calcium build up, especially when not enough water is used to flush like back flush.

I assume by discharge hose you mean the big hose 2 3/8” from pump to the head. I have rigged a new 1” hose from pump to bucket to eliminate the house hoses with same issue. I ordered the big hose but was back ordered so I gotta wait until I find a replacement.

It can be either the hose between the head and the pump or the hose between the pump and the holding tank, especially when you have a long run.

As I mentioned I have a new hose from the discharge port going straight to a bucket.

Is this by any chance the centre head on the 53

Yes it is. Let me say this again I have a new hose from the discharge going straight to a bucket no tank or overboard plumbing involved. I’m losing prime to the rotor stator, if I were to remove the priming plug air escapes then water and things are good til it loses prime again.

I had the same problem with my centre head
I took the head to Raz in fort Lauderdale who replaced the staters and serviced it
No problems thereafter

I just did stator rotor and shaft seal hoping to end this problem.

Old stiff rubber stators have messed me up before.

It does sound like you are drawing air in from somewhere.
That lip that makes the dome gasket can move unnoticed also.
Over tightening the dome may also cause issues.

I used to try to shave that molding seam down on the plastic rotor. Helps the stator run smoother and last longer.

When I cruised thru boat swap shops, always an eye out for an original brass rotor in good shape. Think I still have some in reserve for the Hatt I help on.

What ever it is, when you find it, it will be simple. Uggha

Have same issue with guest head. Replaced discharge line to tank still no flush. It’ll flush into a bucket for 2-3 flushes and then nada 😡. Put in new stator 4 yrs ago. Trying to decide if I want to send pump to Raz or order parts and rebuild. If there were any 32volt replacements I’d replace the damn thing. Another potential issue is that it sounds like the pump surges.?? Well… if it was easy, girls would be doing it.🙄

Bob, they are so easy to rebuild order the parts and do it yourself.

If it helps Leland my rotor stator and seal are all new and I don’t believe that the motor is faulty. The surging you hear is the stator is airlocked. When I pull the plug from the priming plug air escapes then fills with water and pumps normally until it doesn’t. Watching from from the head I can hear the difference in pump sound.

Same problem with my day head ( 1 of 3 heads on my 1990 54 ED). I bleed the air out and all is good until i run the boat then it gets air locked again. Replaced the stators last year and my head gets used frequently.
