I think my 32v Galley Maid Model BBHW-32-20-5736-333 with 1200lbs capacity died. The motor got wet and seized up. I probably should have replaced the foot pedals.

I would like your thoughts on whether I should replace the existing motor only or if there have been significant improvements in newer stuff.

THanks

Have you considered have the motor rebuild/rewound, it may be the easiest way to go.

Good chance the motor just needs cleaning/lubing and maybe new bearings. Same is true of the windlass itself. It's really unlikely that anything actually broke. Cleaning/lubing and possible bearings/bushings are likely the fix.

I don't think there is anything "new" in the windlass world - it's just a motor spinning some gears. The only thing "new" is in the switching itself which can now be wireless. But that could be added to any windlass, regardless of age. No doubt there's an iphone app for that! :)

Re: Noisy Galley Maid Anchor Windlass
I caught up with Rick Schaeffrick of Galley Maid (he is the guy who works as a tech for them) and he has indeed modified a few of these winches to provide a thin needle bearing thrust bearing for the power down mode. He estimates about $300 to do it so it will be done once we return to Florida. It is not a 'perfect' solution as the bearing will be located between the motor and the gear box, so it does not get continuous lubrication. Meanwhile we will use free fall for anchoring.

Rick is happy to do free lance work on Galley Maid products. He can be reached at 561-262-8104 (C) or 561-747-5616 (H). He is located near West Palm and commutes to Galley Maid in Okeechobee FL.
