Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
My 1986 Furuno Model No. FR-803D (S/N: 872-1213) display has quit working properly. You can see the sweep rotating if I set it at the max setting but no "blips" are showing up on the screen - only "clutter" in the center. I wrote Furuno and they seem to think it's the magnetron? Does anyone know of a good repair service here on the east coast rather than sending it back to Furuno in Washington state? Thanks.

Try Marine Electronics of the Outer Banks, in Nags Head, NC. They are a Furuno dealer and do repair work on Furunos.

The magnetron has a limited life, so given it's age it is probably 'ready'. I had one of the early 90's vintage and it was easy to R/R the magnetron. See the directions.

What Bobk is saying is true, it is easy to replace the magnetron, and set the power level to it, however, to be set up correctly there are other tests that can be performed, to both insure good operation, and longer magnetron life. If you are unfamiliar with the theory of radar, and transmitters it might best to consult a qualified person. Technically you are supposed to have a FCC license with a radar endorsement to work on the transmitter section of a radar or radio.
