Hatteras Model
32' FLYBRIDGE FISHERMAN (1983 - 1987)
I'm interested in picking up a 6kw furuno hd radar system with the navnet 3d plotter. What components do I need for the system to be complete? When I look at the websites they tell me what the capabilities and price is but I do not know if by spending 8-9k for the radar and chartplotter if I'm getting duplicate components of the same system. What do I need at a minimum? I'm not electronically gifted.

Thanks,

Jack

I don't know what you mean by duplicating. Unless you already have Furuno equipment. You should only receive the radar and the plotter. With most all new style Furuno units you can plug and play. If you want GPS I think you will need a GP-32 or similar unit. Or a powered GPS antenna receiver that will plug into the plotter and provide the GPS nema signal. You can call Furuno 1-410-4794420 They are a great help.
I have the color radar, 2 plotters, GP-32 (GPS), GD-30 (repeater), BBFF1 (sounder), PG1000 (compass),10 plug hub.
I am looking for 2 more plotters. One for the lower helm and a bridge unit. I can run split screen, but I like the bigger screens and prefer not to use split screen. Then I can run radar, navigation and the bottom depth. I also use a hub and can swap each unit. If one quits.

If your talking about the Nav Net system it's confusing to know what you need because there are so many variations. You should call Furuno tech help directly and let them know what your looking to do.

I just bought a Nav Net 3D system with plotter, radar and depth sounder. This arrangement required a hub, but if you are only buying radar and the plotter I don't think the hub is necessary. My supplier threw in the connection cables gratis, but I think they are extra if you purchase the components yourself.

If you want my guys phone number or email address let me know.

I guess calling Furuno would be my best bet. Brian said it better than I. There are so many components I just want to make sure I only have what I need and don't end up with a bunch of extra stuff that would end up not being used.

Talking to Furuno is the best thing to do. Like said. if you just have 2 or 3 units you won't need the hub. They plug directly into the plotter. The plotter is very expandable and universal. But you need to start out right and get the units that work together. I have yet to find any supplier that knows what there talking about. The number in my first post is Furuno in California.. Good luck. I love to use my Furuno units. But they must be set up correct at the start. The manuals are or can be confusing.

Jackman,
As a matter of interest how did you decide on a 6KW radar...that's really bigger than 98% of all recreational boaters need...in other words, was there something a 4KW did not provide that you liked???

While researching things I found that 6kw is best for locating birds. I know that with the line of sight calculation 6kw is overkill as far as how far you can see (Its going to be installed on my hardtop which is about six 1/2 feet from the floor of the bridge, which is about 6ft or so from the waterline)....but I figured the extra power would help me see the birds and get a better look as far as the storms are concerned. When you take charters as I do on occasion I'd like to keep everything in check while 60-80miles off.

The 3d is not compatable with anything from the vx1 or 2. I run 12kw on my CC and it lights up the birds. I am going to guess it is mounted 7 feet off the waterline. I do not pick up anything 60 miles out, I think 25 miles is pretty much max for surface radar(ships) at that height. Everyones needs vary but a 6kw radar with 1kw sounder is the least I would want. I really do not like how the Furuno is set up no matter haw bad ars it is. I am adding a Garmin chartplotter and sticking with the Furuno for radar and depth.

#8...good choice for your application....
I have picked up small airplanes on my own radar and the first time (in clear weather) it took me quite a while to figure out what target the radar was reflecting!!!!
