  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1983 - 1988)
Sorry for the dumb question that follows. I have a 1983 53ED MY and I need to replace 2 of the Fuller Brush portlights. Fuller still makes them (7 x 15) and offers them in white or cream. Am I correct in thinking that my original ones are (or were) white? (I'm sure they are not as white as the new ones now).

I've read most of the posts about removing the old ones. Sounds like fun. Thanks.

Never mind, just ordered one from Sam's. Same price and I'd rather give them the business!

I ordered mine from sams and was never asked what color didn't know there was a choice

Was yours installed with 5200 and screws?

How much were they? I have a few to replace as well.
Can you take pixs and document the process?

I think I paid 290 but please don't quote me, from sams but I did get a discount for buying 14 at once. Yes mine were screwed and glued with 5200. It was a difficult to get them out with out damage to the light and the hull paint. I used a strong putty knife and a hammer to get the trim ring off. Then used a oscillating tool to get between the hull and the light. The issue I ran into was the plywood spacer on the inside of the hull some were wet and rotted from years of slow leaks. The with the new lights the trim ring just glues on with no screws. The guy at sams say I should use sikaflex for installing the new ones Since I'm doing a complete refit I haven't installed any yet

It is cool that the Fuller Brush company still makes these. As the story goes, Fuller (I don't know if it was Alfred, the founder, or one of his sons) had a yacht with very leaky portlights. He ordered his engineers to come up with something better and that is why a brush company makes portlights.....

I was surprised to see how sloppy the hole in the hull was cut Once the new light is fastened in from the inside the gap on the out side is just filled with caulk. (5200 or similar). On mine I saw that the light was not evenly spaced in the hole and didn't allow for great caulk job

Hopefully the outside ring will cover all the gunk so you don't have to paint.

What a pity that some of the workers at the Hatteras factory did such a sloppy job with the portlight cut outs. That is the kind of thing you would expect on a lesser quality boat but not on a Hatteras.
