With speculation of $50 or even $40 per barrel oil, does anyone know how that projects to diesel prices if it happens?

Down, but maybe not as much as we would like, where they pay us to haul it away :)

Last time oil was $35 per barrel diesel was around $1.25 at the dock and on the road gas wasn't much more. I doubt we'll see those prices again regardless what oil is. At current oil prices we should be much lower at the pump than what we are seeing. Oil prices continue to fall but gas prices seem to have stabilized. Consider that oil prices have fallen about 40% in the past 6 months and gas prices have gone down about 25%. OPEC is upping production to drive the price down so the US will decrease production and buy more oil from them. Interesting how they wouldn't do that when the US asked them to back in '07 when oil went over $145 per barrel.

This was the big topic of conversation on all the morning news channels.....Squawk Box, Morning Joe, etc... They had experts saying that the $40 barrel is definitely possible, but not sustainable.

Road gas today was 2.52 in my little town In Beauford Sc (no road tax ) 2.25...

So gas and diesel follow crude prices when going up, but don't follow them when crude drops. Ahh of course!

Gas should be around $2 a gallon.

I bought gasoline for 2.59/gallon two days ago in Virginia Beach, near the bridge-tunnel. it isn't that cheap up here in Annapolis.

Funny
fuel in my home town very small place 2.52 130 miles away Morehead city 2.81 near the interstates and around the vacation areas (resorts) seems to be from .24 to .40 higher than my small town. Same name brands!l

I need about 800 gallons of fuel in the boat just waiting and checking news said this AM road fuel will reach under 2.00 per gal . wonder what water fuel will go to.

Unfortunately in this part of the country, lack of competition, small quantities of fuel sold, and infrequent resupply lead to prices not dropping with the market... diesel was 3.59 2 weeks ago...same as it was 2 summers ago.. wish Demopolis wasn't so far away, or we had a truck delivery service.. with the prices I'm hearing, I'd take on 800 to 1000 gallons now

You should get well below $2 for diesel on the water if oil does fall to $40 per barrel. Keep in mind we are in the off season in most areas so the fuel prices won't go down unless they take delivery of fresh fuel or competition forces them to lower prices.

Funny how that works. Gas goes up within days of oil prices rising but when oil falls all you hear is how it takes well over a month for that oil to be refined and get to the pump. Our fuel prices are high compared to the price of crude. Bigger question is how sustainable are the projected lower crude prices and will OPEC keep production high to keep the prices down

I read that one yesterday. Let them battle it out and drive the prices down. Goes to show how artificially inflated oil prices have been over the past 8 or 9 years. I always felt that Katrina created a false shortage that caused fuel prices to spike. Once it was determined that consumption didn't change when prices nearly doubled, there was no reason for prices to come down.

Right, but consumption factors in less than the investors willingness to keep buying the commodity because the price keeps going up. The profit taking surrounding the price increases was what really kept the barrel price high. Investors are apprehensive now, with regard to oil, so it will be interesting to see how low a barrel may go. Be nice to have cheap diesel by the spring!

Question is are you loosing more money on oil stocks or saving more money on fuel?

Excellent point. My large cap's have been doing pretty well over the past few years. I'll have to go check to composition of those funds with that in mind. Don't think I'm too heavy into the energy stocks. Gotta go check that now. Hmmmmm.........

It's all part of the plan. At higher prices, marginal methods of production become viable...like fracking for shale oil, and deep water drilling. So supply rises..And just as predictable, as prices rise, consumption falls..more fuel efficiency cars, electric cars, conservstion, etc. And in this case, to chase away the capital from alternate production methods, OPEC engages in "cruel and injurious" competition. ..flooding supply to keep prices down. And just as predictable, when the bakkan fields are shuttered...opec will cut production and prices will rise again.

just saw on world news that houston tx. has 1.99 a gallon gas. they said to expect 15 cents a gallon drop by new years day. it is 2.31 here in southern mississippi. i'm gonna wait a little while to fill the boat up, she needs about 600 gallons
