  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series II (1990 - 1995)
I don't have a fuel transfer pump, but wondering how much fuel I could dump into my generator tank if I route the fuel returns from the mains to that tank. Would it take hours and hours if I wanted to move like 40 gallons? It would just be if we were in a pinch.

I've done a gallon a few times and it took about 2 to 3 minutes.

It took overfilling a tank during an underway transfer to figure out that my 8v71s were moving slightly less than 2 gallons a minute (both engines combined).

If I am not mistaken, you have the Detroits w/DDECs and there should be fuel priming pumps for each engine. If it is similar to the setup in my engine room the priming pumps are big heavy duty DC viking gear driven pumps. I checked and the pumps are capable of continuous running (2 hrs). I had the momentary switches changed out for on/off switches w/safety off covers. Once I had the switches swapped out, I was able to use the pumps to not only transfer fuel between tanks but also polish fuel.

If you do this, a few notes I have found to be good practice: 1) When transferring fuel, do the calculations to ensure you do not over fill a tank. 2) Ensure your primary and secondary filters are capable of handling the fuel flow for filtering. 3) When poshing the fuel I suggest staying in the engine room to monitor for any potential issues (leaking line, clogged filter, psi/vacuum/level gauges, etc). 4) Call me over cautious, despite the safety on/off switches installed on the pump, I keep the breaker for the pumps in the "off" position when not in use (just like many do for the remote oil drain/fill pump system).

Wow! 2 Gal per minute is definitely more than I expected -- good to know.

And yes, we have priming pumps. I didn't think they moved that much fuel. Also good to know that they can be used to transfer fuel.

Thanks!!

Just as a followup -- these engines move A LOT of fuel. I routed one engine to pull from the large aft tank and return to the smaller forward tank (250 gal - which read about 1/4 full on gauges) and the other to pull from the aft tank and return to the smallest center tank (77 gal - for the generator - almost empty). I would say that within 15 mins both tanks were near full.

None of this very scientific or with any concrete numbers, but the takeaway was that the transfer happened FAST!
