Anyone know of a reasonable (HA,Ha ,Haa) place to fuel while in Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, Cuttyhunk , Nantucket, areas. I will run offshore up and back from the Chesapeake and could do it on one fill but do not want to cut it close on the return as we will most likely be bucking the current and the wind for most of the trip home. ....................Pat

Geez, now I have to clean all the snort spray off my monitor. Reasonable? No. Figure on 25% - 50% above mainland prices. If, as it sounds, you are taking on quite a bit of fuel, you'd be far better running in to Pt Judith, Westerly, or Mystic/Noank. I was in Westerly last week, and the cash price for diesel was $2.64, with a 10 cent premium for credit. Surprisingly, Montauk is no more than the mainland (for diesel anyway). I saw 2.64 there as well at Star Island YC the Thursday before last. And, if you're heading back south, at least that is sort of on your way. Jersey would probably (just guessing here) be cheaper, but it may be too far off your intended course.

Well Montauk is usually one of the best prices for that area. Block usually is higher, I was in Provincetown area 2 weeks ago and it was the best price $2.49. Plymouth was $2.60. Never checked price at Cutty Hunk plus I have heard of them running out. If you go into the Vineyard go to Vineyard Haven they should have the best price.

As a rule, I try to avoid buying New England island diesel. About 10 years ago, I had a very bad experience with water laden diesel at Block Island. A few years later a dock master at Edgartown (Marthas Vineyard) warned me about all the additives put in isalnd fuel to keep it stable. Finally, I was present once when the rusty old fuel barge pulled up to Cuttyhunk to supply the island.

When your primaries clog while out in heavy seas, you'll quickly forget about the money you saved on diesel. Better to get the best quality fuel you can find and that's generally on the mainland.

I agree with previous posts recommending fueling in Montauk, NY; Pt. Judith, or Westerly RI, New Bedford or Fairhaven MA. When you jump offshore, your next stop will likely be Montauk so that's the most logical fueling stop. Good price AND good quality diesel.

Highlands, NJ is asking for around $2.50 per gallon. There is a discount based on volume, usually $0.10 after 200 gallons. I put in some fuel after the Hatteras Rendezvous at the Newport Yachting Center. For Hatteras owners, they charged $2.14 for cash or check and $2.19 for credit. One more benefit of attending the great rendezvous.

I was in Falmouth inner harbor last week and paid 2.22 gal. Its the last fuel dock at the end of the harbor on the right side. I think boats come from all over to fill there. Good luck
