I have 1976 46c. After 4 hour steam I noticed a strong fuel smell in the engine room. On the port engine inboard side, I found traces of fuel on the housing between trans and engine. Also seems to be around the small oval plate which I think may be the cylinder inspection plate. I had new injectors installed recently, was wondering if that might be a source as well.

Wipe down everyhing in the area.

Start engine, get out flashlight, see where its coming from. In all probability you will find a leaking line or fitting near the fuel cooler or some other piece of external plumbing.

I just had a similar experience coming home on Sunday. It turned out it was a fuel filter canister that had sprung a leak and was peeing all over the place!

Of course, this canister was 40 years old, so it was not totally unexpected, I guess.

I'd bet on a fitting or hose leak in that area or within shooting range of the mess.

You may be surprised where the fuel comes from. I had a leak that sent fuel all over the starboard side of the boat. I got everything cleaned up and started it. Me and two other guys climbed over, under and all around that engine and still couldn't find a leak. Finally started the port side and it was obvious then....just a fine mist coming from the fuel line coming into the filter and squirting all over the other engine. Kind of like some water leaks, it may be coming from somewhere else.
