  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
According to the tank tender and my Google Earth plotting, Lilly Marie burned 59 gallons over 75 nm of travel at an average of 8.3 kts. That included 10 hours of generator time. Assuming .6 gph on the gen that works out to 53 gallons for 75 nm or about 1.4 nmpg.

Before the trip I added 29 gallons of fuel which moved the aft tank gauge from 8.6 to 10.9 inches. The trip from Pascagoula to the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor is about 29 nm. I took about 14 groomsmen and guests out to Ship Island which was about a 17 nm round trip. When we got home yesterday afternoon the tank tender read 6.2 inches. 4.7 inches x 12.6 gallons / inch = 59 gallons.

We have the same boat and a few questions?

What RPM's were you running?

Are there currents in your area?

Thanks - Will

Good info, mine is very similar burn also. 1979 43DC 6-71 N series 310 hp

Vincent did you add the fuel to one tank under a berth. Do you have the twin berth set up. Trying to figure what the gallons per inch are on mine. Sounds like we may have the same arrangement.

I run each engine off it's own tank then fill each after a long run and check consumption that way, my gauges are way off calibration and not to be trusted.

The aft tank is under the queen berth in the aft cabin and is reported to hold 283 gallons. There is also is a tank in the ER which brings the total capacity to 375. I generally run off the aft tank which also feeds the generator all the time.

The gallons per inch is not exact and seems to vary with the level of fill. When I added the 29 gallons before the trip that changed the depth 2.3" and I used 12.6 gal / inch to calculate fuel used.

There are varying winds and currents, but nothing very significant and the data is based upon runs both ways at similar times of day. Most of my running was at 1150 to 1200 rpm. I did run the boat up to a little over 15kts and about 2000 rpm to warm things up for about 10 minutes. Speed is by gps and varied less than 1 kt at the same rpm.

Regards,

For the older boats with twin berths, each tank is 200 gallons. For mine suprisingly, its 10 gallons per inch x 20" high. With tank tenders, I get the same reading as using a stick so the read is pretty much within a couple of gallons of what is in each tank. Confirmed with multiple fills provided the readings on the fuel pumps are accurate. I usually use an initial reading to know how many gallons to add to get to 190 on each side and it is spot on all the time.

My burn rate is the same DD 6-71 N's.. But I have to "stick" my tanks as there are no guages of any type on them....
