  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
67' COCKPIT MY (1987 - 1995)
I have a 1989 67’ CPMY that is new to me. I am trying to fill the water tank(s). However the water just comes out the breather thru hull. Does not seem to be going in the tanks. Any ideas of what would cause this issue? The tank gauge says empty confirmed by no water coming out taps. Just to head off the obvious answer that the tanks are full.

Tanks could be full. Have you primed the pump?

Is there a shut off valve or a diverter valve just before the water tank? You might stick a scope down the hose to see if something has clogged it before the tank. Have you pulled the gauge out of the tank sometimes they get stuck.

Have you turned on the circuit breaker for the interior water pump? If it hasn’t worked for a while, you may have to prime it before it will start kicking in.

I put a new Wema sender in my FW tank. About a year later it stuck in then full position, so as mentioned before could be full and pump needs priming. I’d start with taking the sender out to eyeball the tank level then work your way forward. What type of pump do you have?

The water gauge on the tank is showing empty as well as no water coming out of faucets

Again, did you try to prime your water pump? Gauges stick. Water coming out of the vent would indicate a full tank. Verify it by pulling the gauge and looking in there as Sadey suggests.

I will confirm tank water level and pump prime tomorrow when I go back to the boat. Thanks for input!!

The gauge could be stuck in the empty position. Pull them and clean them and make sure the cork rides free along the rails.

The only way water will come out of the vent is if the tank is full. No other way

What model pump do you have, is it running ?

Our water pump has a low water pressure cut off on the pressure switch, you have to hold the lever on the side of the pressure switch up until the pump builds pressure.. I always have to manually prime the pump at the start of boating season but it is good as long as I don't let the tank get empty

Found the problem(s). 1) It helps when the helper turns on the correct breaker. There was no power to pump. 2) The water gauge does seem to be stuck on “E”. So I need to fix that. Good news though is I have water again. Now it’s time to bleach and flush water tanks.

Been there done that, I ops tested the off position on the three-quarter full light breaker to our holding tank. Found out about the positive test when the dock hands pointed out the brown water running down the side of the hull coming from the tank vent.
