How rare is this. A new phone information service that actually works as advertised and is free (for now)...! (us elderly used to call it 'long distance information'). I have tried it and to my amazement it worked.
Dial: 1-800-goog411 aka 1-800-4664411

This comes from a friend that I trust who writes the following:

"This is really neat. Works good. I've called places and had them tell me how to find them too. Saves putting a lot of numbers in you phone. I've had it for a while, so maybe you already know about it. This email gives a nice video demo. Try it.

FABULOUS TIP

This is great , something FREE.... No charges on the cell Wow!!"
End of his message.

> I encourage you to watch the short video about this service.

> Here is something you will want to have and use ! I still remember when the telephone company charged me $0.00 now they charge $1.00 to $1.50 to get a phone number from information.
> My compliments to Google!

> Here's a number worth putting in your cell phone, or your home phone speed dial: 1-800-goog411. This is an awesome service from Google, and it's free -- great when you are driving on the road with no pen, pencil or paper handy..

> Don't waste your money on information calls and don't waste your time manually dialing the number. I am driving along in my car and I need to call the golf course and I don't know the number. I hit the speed dial for information that I have programmed.
>
> The voice at the other end says, "City & State." I say, " Garland , Texas ." He says, "Business, Name or Type of Service." I say, Firewheel Golf Course." He says, "Connecting" and Firewheel answers the phone. How great is that? This is nationwide and it is absolutely free!

I'm pretty sure you still get charged if you call that number from your cell. Airtime is airtime unless you have unlimited minutes.

Is that one like 800FREE411 where you have to listen to all those damn commercials before you get a computer that doesn't know what the hell you're saying?

Maybe it's my accent. :D

Well, I never use all my cell minutes anyway, but it avoids the $1.50, for the wrong number I always get from AT&T. Anything is subject to change, i.e. later maybe they will change to a billable service. But for now, free, as far as I know. And no commercials. Very straightforward.

The "no commercials" part sounds good. I'd rather pay for 411 than sit and listen to all that crap. Do you get a real person or a voice recognition computer when you call?

You get a pretty decent IVR (interactive voice reponse system), i.e. computer voice, but it is very good and recognizes words rapidly. As good as I have used. Also, it will read back details about the party, such as address, etc., if you ask. AT&T instantly connects you to a wrong number (50% of time in my experience.)...grrr.

Thanks for the info, I'll give it a shot.

Seriously, that number I mentioned has a terrible computer which drives me crazy whenever I use it. I'll give it the name of a restaurant or whatever, and it will come back with something that's not even close. After a couple of times hearing, "did you say blah blah blah?", I usually hang up and dial 411.

I laugh at the wife every time she uses it. She's the one who told me about it, but her facial expressions and the quickly changing tone of voice are hysterical! :D
