  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
37' CONVERTIBLE (1977 - 1982)
Just had my v-berth on the 37C reconfigured on the starboard side and need a reasonable sourse for a 5" foam mattress in New England area.
Thanks Hal

Buy a "memory foam" mattress at Wally World or wherever and cut it to size. You can easily cut even large/thick foam pieces straight and clean with a hand held hacksaw blade if you grind off the "set" of the blade's teeth. The "set" is the part of the teeth that stick out farther (side to side, usually alternating right to left) than the thickness of the blade body. Blades are made this way so they cut a wider curf than the blade body so it doesn't stick in the cut.
Wrap the end of the blade in tape for a place to hold it, and saw away.
Another way to get the foam cut is to mark the outline and take it to a foam fabricating/ packing house. They will have large bandsaws with a "wavy knife blade" that are set up to cut foam cleanly, and will probably do it for a nominal fee, as it will only take a couple minutes to accomplish.
Don't have the foam cut with a "hot wire" cutter as that will leave hard sharp edges (melted crunchies) you'll feel through the sheets, and the Admiral will tell you you're stupid (again  )

Not sure if you have Ollies there, but if you do, they have foam sheets, 4" x 72" x 32" for about $70 I think. Basically, single mattress size.

I bought my boat from the guy who owns the "Swedish Tempurpedic" matress empire. He had custom ones made for all the berths on board, and they cost him big $$ for the custom molds. I asked him how much to make ones for another boat, and he said "There aint that much mula" so I guess it was a ROYAL PIA.
Whatever, they're incredibly comfortable :D

Sams (not marine) has the big memory foam mattress too. I have seen the electric filet knives used to cut foam.

An electric knife from the galley works very well. I used that to cut all of the thick foam (about 6") I used in my seat cushions. And it's quick too.

Most fabric stores sell the foam for these mattresses. That's where all the Bimini folks buy.

I have seen the foam cut two ways.

Depending on thickness, you can lay a straight edge ( flat bar aluminum 1/4 thick ) on the mattress, then press it down and cut with a razor.

This is the method I use to cut veneer. Go slow, don't slice your thigh open

And the other way is with the electric carving knife that most of the Bimini girls use. Very fast and easy.

They mark it with a straight edge and sharpie pen, and cut away including shaping the round over corners.

Thank you ror the responses
HAL
