  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
34' SPORT CRUISER (1961 - 1965)
Preface: I've read the previous posts about Flowscans and talked with Craig Willis of Floscan.

Here are my questions. Would it make sence to preplace my vintage Hatteras Tachs with side by side Floscan diplays? Craig says one display with a toggle is the typical set up. Has anyone replaced both tachs with Floscans?

Floscan makes a combo tach/fuel flow meter with digital MPG and total gallons consumed which fits in the place of each original tach. I installed them on my 27' Albemarle (w/ twin 350 cid gas) a few years ago and they are very helpful for long range cruising/fishing. The dual function of the
units precludes extra holes or switches. The units link to the GPS so you get very accurate “over the bottom” NMPG to two decimal places. As an aside, I discovered that I can get 5 NMPG on one engine at 5 knots, but with both engines above 8-9 knots mileage ranges from 1.11 to 1.18 NMPG all the way to 30 knots. Not much incentive to lug along at 18-20 knots. I usually run 3,000 RPM at 25 knots, 1.15 NMPG.

I replaced both tachs on Gigabite with Floscans and loved the change. One of the better things I did with the boat.

I replaced mine. The FloScans fit right in the holes. My old tachs were pretty faded after all that time in the sun. The FS does not have an hourmeter, but I have more accurate (clock time, not just calculated from the total revs from the Hatteras tach) Hobbs meters in the engine room. The FS digital tachs are spot on whereas the Hatt geared ones were always off a little.

I kept the old ones in case I ever want to go back, but the FloScans are pretty nifty!

The FS system I installed had hourmeters (non-resettable) in them. They also had both a totalizer (fuel burned) and gph/mpg display (toggle switch select)

You need THREE switches - two momentary push buttons (put those somewhere that they can't be accidentally hit - they reset the totalizers) and one for the GPH/MPG display. The latter requires a hookup to your GPS to work.

Both of my tachs were replaced with Flowscans a while back, so they're probably the older models. They show rpms, gph burn, and hours. I've compared them to mechanical tachs on the engines, and the rpm readings are dead on. Haven't been able to compare the accuracy of the fuel burn...hope to do that this spring.

I want these!! Who has the best price on them for a pair of 8V92TIs, assuming Egaito (Ed) is going to install them (he doesn't know it yet!)?

Actually, I've found the factory price on their web site to be the best so far.

I looked there and found a price of $4,080 for the twin engine set up. They will be at the Miami Boat Show...maybe they will have special pricing. I will be sure to check it out.

Hi Angela - look further to the right - I think you caught the first price (retail) while the factory direct price is next to it! (So did I at first!!)

Rob

You need TWO units and they are DIFFERENT.

I got mine from a place on the east coast (I can look it up but shopping the boat show is at least as good and maybe better) and if I recall correctly it was in the $2600 range all-up for the units.

I did the install myself. It IS somewhat tricky but not too bad. You will need different tach senders; Xintex has ones that work well.

2,600 for tachs????????? guess I'd better look at the web site. You guys really think they are worth that? I need a set of tachs for the repower I'm doing, but man that hurts.

Its not just tachs. Its also flow and hour meters, and they are VERY accurate.

You (1) won't run out of fuel, and (2) you'll figure out where the best place to run the boat is damn quick with them on board. If you use the boat at all they'll pay for themselves in a year or two in reduced fuel expenses.

checked the web site. still steep, but like you say they'll probably pay for themselves quickly

We have two Navman units, one is a GPS and the other is a bottom machine. We installed their optional fuel flow system and after a little calibration it is perfect. Far more information than you ever need and large charachters also. I don't think you can spend over $1200.00 for everything including the displays, antanaes, sounder through hull unit, and fuel flow kit. The stuff works great.
