  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I have a 1980 43' Hatt. Some very nice passenger pulled the emergency fire extinguisher and the engine room was filled with carbon dioxide. For those wondering, the system will shut down the engines. I live in Orange Beach, Al and was wondering where I might get the bottled refilled. It has never been discharged and also wonder does this have to be DOT and any other inspections. Is it best just to buy a new one. If so where. Help needed. Will Shelton

Any fire extinguisher service company should be able to refill it. They do need to be periodically hydro tested, but they should be able to do that too. The place I go to says they have CO2 bottles from the 1930's still in service.

You might also want to have the whole system tested including the red pucks that set the bottle off.

I hope the passenger was removed from the invite list, even he or she is 5!!

I've also had some less than helpful guests.

Nice to know it works!

(Or maybe not so nice.)

Bottle should be hydo tested while its out.

Certification of the system will require a current hydro. Most dive shops do it for less. I am re certifying mine now.

Most dive shops take the bottles to the local tester. The same place the fire guys go. Dive shops are just less greedy than fire bottle guys.

Will,
I heard from another passenger that you handled a very frustrating experience in a kind and very gentlemanly manner. Hope the remediation goes well.

I had a similar experience, while having new carpet installed.
The fire bottle guys here in Clearwater Fl charged about $250 to check and fill.
The Five ft. tall bottle is a pain to R&R.

Thanks to all that replied with the advice as to the possible cost and where to go. I am a certificated diver and think the local dive shop is the place to start..

BTW Vincent. Thanks for your remarks. Its a small world. You need to come my way the next time too.
