  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)

A 80' Lazzarra caught fire and trapped two guys inside. The fire department cut them out the side of hull. They were in there for 40 minutes! It burned a 2005 74 viking sport fish named "Vera D" next to it down to the water line also. What a mess....

I just checked my smoke alarms.....

It makes you wonder if we're not going to see more of this as prices fall and people are unable to make their loan payments. I'm not saying that this one was insurance fraud. It just make you wonder what the future holds. If people will sacrifice their boats to a hurricane in good times, what will they do when times get tough?

Geez it's bad enough already with some of the carelessness I've seen from owners and operators, let alone add an "incentive". There's a Boatyard here in the Chicago area that's already had 2 fires this year - neither being intentional arson. There are lots of people who will not be in the water this year due to these fires.

By the way, check your inurance coverages. Word is, that some people are not going to be made whole by the Boatyard insurance in these events. At a minimum, they will spend hours talking to lawyers - not many people's favorite activity, even when they are on your side.

glad you're ok ned.

reading the articles, it doens't seem like Miami Dade brand new boat responded very quickly, nor the USCG right across from the channel, did they? you'd think they'd be the first ones on scene... i hope it's just an omission in the paper!

Youch.

Note - make sure your smoke detectors work. Fire alarms are CRITICAL items guys - you have literally seconds in most boats to get to safety once a fire starts.

In addition all compartments should have at least two ways out that go via DIFFERENT routes. Hatteras did a better job than most in this regard with their vessels, especially their sportfish, in that the overhead hatches are, in general big enough for most people to get through.

Those two guys are lucky to be alive.

Holy crap, since I've joined this forum I've read about at least 3-4 fires now. This is scary. I'm glad I won't have to be at a marina permanently.

Pascal, up near home in Woodbridge, the local town used the "9-11" Homeland security money to buy this fancy boat that lives on a lift. The fire stations is at least 5-10 minutes away, and there was a story that at low tide they can't get off the lift. That boat had to be at least $500k. Mind you, this is not a patrol boat, it responds! The wasting of tax dollars makes me sick sometimes.

And look how they cator to the tax dollar spenders..."GSA ADVANTAGE!" http://www.metalcraftmarine.com/html/firestorm_36.html

Thanks Pascal,

It was a couple of piers over, on the fuel dock! Watch the news at 6 for some pics of the fire. A captain down the dock, Upwind thankfully, (Matty from the "Owls Nest" - Real great guy, he is also is on the fishing show "In the Bite") woke up, heard the screaming and jumped in Bouncer Smiths CC charter boat, (33 Dusky- twin engines) fired it up and drove the firefighters over to the side of the burning boat. He held it in postion while the firefighters cut the hull open and freed the guys. He should and probably will get an award. Wow...

My dog started barking about 6:45 am.. He never ever barks..We got up and looked out and saw flashing lights. The admiral goes wow, it sure is foggy. I said that aint fog! I guess my dog smelled it. As soon as you opened the cockpit door, THE SMELL was very apparent. I rode my bike down quickly and the boats were still smoking like crazy. What a mess. I guess they will bring in a barge and crane and chop them up...

I'm going to get some more fire extinguishers I think.....
