  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I was o a day charter when an overheat alarm went off on the lower helm, but not flybridge.
Not Hatt controls. My boat has Volvos.
By the time I checked the second set of gauges the temp had lowered and the alarm stopped. After about 5 minutes it occurred again for a minute then stopped. This time I made it down to the engine room and verified on the mechanical gauges that the stbd engine was getting hot. So shut down !
After backing into my slip (on one engine) and deboarding guests, I started diagnosis.
The strainer seemed full and clear, there was some water flow out the exhaust.
Pulled impeller cover. All looked ok. Restarted and no water flow.
Rechecked strainer and decided to open it up.
One of the wing nuts was loose. No water leak but apparently it was sucking air and causing pump to loose prime but also get it back again intermittently.
Hope this helps someone else !!!
Capt. Rob
