  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' LRC (1976 - 1981)
Did a search thinking that surely this subject must have been fully explored in the past, but did not find anything.

So, the question is how do you remove the black mildew on white fenders, Taylor Big B, and similar products without turning the surface into a sticky mess?

I use fender covers, and just removed them to replace with some new ones, and the fender vinyl surfaces are more black than white.

Thanks

Pete

I use Spray Nine cleaner and if it's really hard to get off then you might try a Mister Clean scrubbling pad. Usually the Spray Nine woks - spray it on, let it soak and brush off, might take two or more applications.

I've always had really good luck with Aurora Marine products. So far, they've all done what they say they would. They're free rinsing, they don't leave a sticky residue behind. Not cheap though.....

I hit mine with a 50% water bleach solution. Let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes. Mildew will desolve. It may take two applications if really bad. Then take Dawn and a Mr Clean white soft scrub pad after any dirt. Rinse throughly. Works perfectly.

Dilute clorox 1:3 with water removes mildew on just about any nonabsorbent surface. It's cheaper than "mildew" removers which are basically the same thing. Plus you can make it stronger if needed. It's the only mildew remover I use nowadays.

Liquid Pool shock is the best! Like magic

I help clean a hard bottom dinghy this morning that was covered in mildew. The owner used a sponge and a 50% solution of Clorox bleach. There was no scrubbing. The mildew dissolved in front of our eyes. We then went to surface down using dish soap and water, once dried we applied three coats of 303 and the surface looks almost new. Give it a try it works

Of the items suggested I do not have the liquid pool shock and Aurora. Will get some the pool shock next time I go near Wally World, and give the ideas a try. Will see is anything works for my situation and report back. I tend to stay away from anything that will abrade the surface so the Mr. Clean pads may or may not get used, hoping something else will avoid that requirement.

Rsmith, back for some coaching. I have never owned or serviced a pool, so be assured what follows will be less than intelligent questions for the informed.

Went to Wallyworld and looked for liquid pool shock. None available, so I decided to grab some pool chlorine, 10% stuff. Later did some searching on the internet to discover there is no "liquid" pool shock sold. It is all granular and gets mixed by the end user. Most examples suggest mixing in a five gallon bucket and then pouring into pool near the pump intake to mix in the filter flow.

So, a little coaching, please. Is the 10% Sodium Hypochlorite pool chlorine what you suggested as the container mentions using it to shock a pool. If so, do I use it straight out of the bottle, or diluted to some level.

Or did I get the wrong stuff, and need the granular stuff to mix a batch. If so what mix rate.

I need the Fender Cleaning With Pool Shock for Dummies version of instructions.

Thanks

Pete

You're making way to much of this. Please just but some cheap bleach, mix it 50% with water and spray it on. Let it sit and watch the mold disappear. Rinse with water. Done. Happy cleaning.

30 second cleaner. You can get it from home depot or lowes. Its fairly inexpensive and contains bleach.

Try On-Off. Spray, let it sit about 30 seconds, scrub with a scotch bright and rinse thoroughly. Then wash again with spray 9 and again rinse thoroughly. Works well for me

Absolute final solution is to use full strength Acetone on throw-away rags. It melts a very small surface of the fender which makes it all wipe off clean and very easy, and it dries to a surface like new. Be careful, wear gloves, etc. but works great. Does the same magic on most electric dock cords that get dirty.

Good to hear from you Doug. While I concur that Acetone will clean those items, won't it affect the plastic and cause it to get soft and more prone to have dirt stick to it. My fenders are very large and black and since they are black I don't clean them much except with soap and water. My 50 amp cord however is another story.

I don't think anybody meant granular pool shock. Household bleach from the grocery store is 3-6% chlorine (sodium hypochlorite actually). The stuff from the pool store that they put in the yellowish containers for you is 10-12%. So same stuff, all liquid, different starting concentrations. My experience in order of agressiveness:

Simple Green or Spray 9

Softscrub

Bar Keepers Friend

Mild chlorine solution (dilute with water, spray it on and wait. Rinse really good especially if you get it on any dock lines or threads)

Higher concentration chlorine solution (be careful and DO NOT mix with acid! - liberates pure chlorine gas which is dangerous)

Acetone or lacquer thinner

On off (be careful strong stuff, especially when hot from the sun - it actually fumes and as above, no chlorine)

I tried MikeP's mixture of 1/3 Chlorox and 2/3 water on the inside of my dinghy cover which had extensive mildew spots that wouldn't come out with detergent and heavy scrubbing. The mildew was gone in 10 minutes.
Thanks Mike.

I haven't found anything that I couldn't clean with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser + Soft Scrub with Bleach
