We don't see many crewed private yachts around here , but I don't think I have ever seen a female Captain. Are there many employed, or is it I don't get out much. I would think a female crew would work well .

Are you trolling?

What makes you think a female crew would work well?

I know a few female captains and I will say a couple of them are not only as capable and strong as their male counterparts but also about as attractive.

I also have a lady friend who is licensed and teaches sailing. Much prettier that the ones referred to above.

I'd let that last bunch run my boat.

In Hatterfas NC there is a femal cap and femal mate. They catch fish and on good days the senery is better than a snagle tooth man and stinking mate . She runs a 32 blackfin daily off shore..

Pic or she doesn't exist.

All,

I've been a member of this forum for quite some time, and I have seen numerous threads morph into political or personal issues/arguments. Ordinarily, however, this forum is incredibly useful, intelligent and fun.

This, however, is the first time I've ever been ashamed of being a member of the HOF. I'm not sure what the originator of this thread had in mind, but in the short duration it's been up it has degenerated into a misogynistic nightmare.

To hold up a picture of Captain Sarah Breton, one of the first female cruise ship Captains, and make fun of it, is unacceptable. This entire thread, in fact, is now unacceptable by any modern standards of conduct. Through 31 years in the United States Coast Guard, I've known many extraordinary women captaining and crewing boats/ships, both in the military and civilian sectors. If I were to show this post to the woman who was my navigator on two successive trips to Antarctica, one of the most competent Coast Guard Officers I've ever had the good fortune of serving with, she'd be appalled, and I'd be embarrassed to be associated with this group.

If anyone is moderating this site, it would be good to remove this before it degenerates further.

Yea. God forbid hot women in bikinis have anything to do with boating.

And no one mention fishing. The hunters will get jealous.

Well, then I rekn' you best not show it to her then.

In trying to keep this civil,...

At the 2013 NE rendezvous in Block Island I spent a lot of time talking to a captain who ran a beautiful Downeast charter boat that her father had previously owned and operated. The boat was captained and maintained by her and looked like it just came from the factory.

Most of the conversation was about a repower gone awry. She knew fishing and boathandling, but not the technical aspects of engines and the yard that f'd up the repower completely dismissed her concerns because she was a woman. But she was right, there was something fundamentally wrong with their work.

It's got to be a tough road dealing with that just because of your plumbing.

I find that hard to believe that the only reason they messed up and dismissed her was because she was a woman.

They dismissed her because she didn't know her stuff and they were swindlers. And I bet they would've done the exact same thing to a MAN that didn't know his stuff with the exact same outcome.

And of course, she could've asked somebody for assistance that knew what they were talking about. But, statistically that would most likely be a man, and that's no good, because men are pigs. Though, I'm sure there are women out there that know engines...just like there are probably a few women working in coal mines, on oil rigs, and signed up for selective service...just like there are a few men that work in HR, marketing, daytime TV talk shows, advertising, teaching, trade show modeling.

Spoken like a future mr. Mom.

Certainly not the only reason. She was in a bad spot because her father had initiated the repower, and passed away during the job leaving her dealing with the fallout. So they dismissed her for a number of reasons, but it was clear that one of them was gender. An obstacle a male would not have to overcome.

My guess is these women are less thin skinned than you seem to be.

I've met a few female professional captains and a couple were exceptional. One ran a small charter business and another was a well respected SF captain who ran some very big high end boats in the tournament circuit. That's how she met her husband. She ran and over sees the crew for thier 63 Hatt and 150ft MY. One of the best female boat owner/captain I ever met was a woman in her late 70's who ran her single engine Gulfstar 36? She took that boat out in any weather and put her in a very tight slip perfectly every time. Half the marina would stay at the dock because they were afraid it would be to tough to get back in when the wind was blowing. She did it effortlessly with a single screw and no thrusters.
