Factory 12 Point Alarm system - Operational questions

I am into the 2nd year of owning a 1978, 53' YFman. The PO hadn't used the boat for 3 years prior to me purchasing it and many of the systems were non-functional. One of them being the factory alarm system. It, now has bubbled to the top of my project list and I have a few questions.

1) the schematic I have is labeled Systems Monitor 12 Point 32V... and shows inputs from both engine rooms, companion way, etc. The terminal block on the pedestal only what appears to be 2 cables with 4 wires each on one side. The other side has wires going to the control box. The control box, which I am including a picture of, has 4 indicator lights, a rotary switch and a toggle switch.

- Is this actually the correct control box for a 12 point system?
- If so, with only one indicator light labled as each sensor, (fire, oil, heat, bilge) how do you tell which one (Port or Starboard engine room) has triggered the alarm?
- I think I know where the engine rooms sensors are, but where are the companion way, upper level sensors?

2) does anyone have an operators manual for this system? Or, can someone describe how to use it? In other words, what does the rotary and toggle switch do?

3) does anyone know that if I send this into Flight Systems for a checkout, do they replace non-functioning indicators, re-silkscreen the faceplate?

4) all of the wiring was laying behind the pedestal unconnected. I was able to get power to the unit, wired the horn and sensors. When I turned on the key, the horn sounded but again, not sure of how it is supposed to operate.

5) the terminal strip that the sensor wires are hooked to has 2 cables with 4 wires each attached to one side. The other side is where I attached the cable that goes to the control box. Is this correct for a 12 point monitor? The terminal strip has at least 6 more open lugs.

Thanks,

Tim

That looks nothing at all like the 12pt alarm system panel on our 1980 53MY but perhaps Hatt changed them sometime between '78 and 80. There are indicators for 4 port sensors, 4 starboard sensors, and 4 common sensors.

Here's a poor pic but shows the panel on our 53; the same panel is at the upper helm:

Ok thanks.

What I have found out is my boat was one of the last ones to have been made with the Crozier Marine 4 point system. They changed to the 12 point system later on in 1978.

There is no one left that can repair/check it out. Sams has the exact replacement box, but only 2 of the sensors and no documenation.

So at this point, I'm hoping someone will read the thread and know how to tell me that the system is works properly so I can determine if there is a problem with mine or not.

Tim,

I have the same unit in our 1969 53' MY. If you like give me a PM and send your number. We can exchange our knowledge. Mine seems to work fine...

I too have a non functioning unit... mostly disconnected and abused but it goes like this. I have a 58 TC with one engine room, so there is a fire detector over each engine. Every bilge area has a level detector, and each engine has a temp and oil alarm. The rotary switch tests the zones and the toggle silences the annunciator. I believe the unit is live when the key is switched on. ws
