  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' MOTOR YACHT (1964 - 1968)
We have a 1969 50MY. The engines use 32v. I am thinking of adding a 12v alt to one eng. This would keep up the 12v battery I use for electronics.
My gen is 12v but I would like to charge of the DD.
Has anyone done this?
What type alt?

Yes - I have one (on an 871TI). Each engine has one 32V alternator, and my STBD engine also has a 12V alternator. I have one of the nice milti-stage Balmar regulators on it, but can't recall the make of alternator. I will take a peek and see if I can find the details for you.

Bottom line, though, is that it is a nice setup.

Take care - Murray

Murray,

how / where is the 12v alternator installed on the engine? I've been thinking about adding one which could also recharge the inverter bank in case the genset fails...

i just dont' see where to mount it? using the same pulley / longer belts as the 32v alternator and adding a bracket to mount the 12v alternator?

my eng 's 8-92's in my 58yf
I installed a bracket under the 32 volt alt on the starbd eng...easiest to work on from the companionway..
if you look there is a threaded hole that you can put a bolt into to hold a pc of angle iron...may even be 2 holes there...I am away from the boat...it is at the front of the eng near the flywheel...
I made a bracket out of a pc of angle iron ..you have to measure how far out the angle needs to be so the alt pulleys will line up with the flywheel....welded 2 connector nuts [used to put 2 pcs of althread together] on the angle iron spaced them apart the distance needed to have the alt fit between ..approx 4-5 inches...
drill out the threaded nuts to let a long bolt slide thru...and use a stop nut on the end...this will let the alt have the ability to move up and down for adjustment...built another bracket for the adjustment arm also bolted to the front of the eng...
this all sounds difficult ...but was not

ps
when I run the alt puts back in 30-70 amps into the 12 volt bank
12 6volt golf cart batts..when I get to the dock the inverter charger only charges for 5-15 min to come up to full charge
works for me
