Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Hi guys, well hear is my question, my 53' hateras has 8v71s with those big tanks on top of the motors behind the blowers. the two exhaust mans, go up two the tank and one exhaust pipe runs down and aft. they are ugly and I would like too get rid of them. Is this a big job? a former hatteras owner told me that these can crack and water can hyd. the motors!!!! do you folks know of anyone who has changed these or who I can talk too about doing this. thank you Rickey

It sounds like you've got a set up like the eng on the right in the pic. Note the raw wtr inlet right behind the exh manifold. This is a wet exhaust and should it fail, it will hydro lock your eng, as you've indicated.

You want to convert to a dry exhaust (eng on left).

http://www.marine-exhaust.com is a good source for the manufacture of the components you'll need.

OK I don't understand, you say the engine on the right I take it that is the port motor right the one with the raw water in the maniflod. my motors are like the port motor that is shown in the pic. I guess the bulkhead in the pic is aft of the motors right so if thats true then mine are like your starboard motor as you can see the tank on top. I'll try to send some pics

You got it right, the view is aft. The eng on the right is the Port eng.

If I understand you correctly, your eng’s are like the Port eng in the pic. Then yours are wet exhaust. The Stbd eng in the pic has a dry exhaust setup. That’s what you want to convert to.

BTW, this is not my engine room! I captured the pic from an add.
