Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I just purchased a 1979 43' motor yacht with twin Detroit 371's. The exhaust noise is very loud at or above 1500 rpm's. The mufflers are original and the previous owner believes they have fiberglass insides.

Does anyone have experience where they changed the muffler system and were successful in reducing the sound level while under way with this model HATTERAS?

You could go to waterlift mufflers IF you have room for them.

That will quiet it down a LOT. Talk to the muffler folks though about backpressure - you definitely don't want too much, and there is of course the issue of mounting space.

Thanks for the information. I will attempt to contact them. Did you convert to this system with your convertable?

No - the major component of engine noise on my 45C was not the exhaust - the base fiberglass mufflers/expansion chambers did a decent job of quieting that part of it down.

Most of the noise from my engines was mechanical and intake noise.
