Ok, so this past weekend the outboard turbo on stbd engine developed an exhaust leak on the turbo flange on the exhaust side.

I started noticing some darker smoke than usual coming from that engine, and seemed like decreased power. I went down to visually check everything and everything appeared ok, except the engine had used quite a bit more oil than normal.

No biggie I think, just an oil leak somewhere and the engine is consuming it.

So after drifting all night, we crank up for a 5 mile run. When we arrive the cabin has a definite stank/fume in it and the engine room is smokey.

I go down to inspect and see smoke/heat coming off the turbo and exhaust blanket.

We shut down that engine and let it cool for an hour or so.

I climb down in and discover the airsep is sooty black and the exhaust blanket is sooty black as well.

I remove the airsep, fire the engine and everything runs great for the rest of the trip. Oil consumption back to normal and back to no smoke from the engine.

So I guess the soot clogged the air filter, the airflow restriction caused some seals to suck oil and the airflow restriction caused the turbo to get extremely hot. Hot enough to damage the turbo exhaust blanket about 2".

So, obviously the exhaust leak needs to be fixed. Is there anything else I could have damaged? I figure if a seal was damaged the engine would have continued to consume oil after the airsep was removed...?

Maybe I got off easy?

note to self: for gods sake hook up the EGT sensors you installed months ago.... sigh...

I do realize consuming oil could lead to runaway. We do have fully functioning shutdown air flaps on both engines.

If you are still having trouble, I had the same systems and they had to clean the intercooler as well.

Good idea, besides the exhaust leak the engine is running great now. But I will probably pull it off to inspect/clean.

soot is bad. If it entered the engine it needs to be cleaned. Its abrasive and will cause issues.

Start at the first cooler and see if it went to the point of entering the airbox.

If it entered the air box how would you go about cleaning that? Rip off the blower and get down in there with a rag or something? I was thinkBig thte same thing Scott but don’t know how you would clean it out.

I'm thinking/hoping that most of the soot was caught by the airsep. We only ran it without airsep for about 4 or 5 hours.

The turbo's are not overly sooted up, just a light film on them.

It is a quite small exhaust leak, can't really see it with your eyes, just see the evidence of it (build up of soot).

IMHO, unless the sooting is really bad, you don't want to disturb the airbox. It is nearly impossible to clean it without getting debris thru the ports and into the cylinders.

Blowers come off. I've done it when I changed mine. I cleaned the airbox and anything else I could see.
