I searched but suspect I'm using the wrong terms. What is that rubbery sealant that Hatteras used to seal wires and hoses to the bulkheads where thay pass through?

Are you thinking of the stuff they used to call Thiokol?

Depending on when it was built they probably used different compounds.

If you are looking to seal a firewall bulkhead use the same caulk that is used in electrical. If its low and needs to be waterproof use a silicone based caulk.

Is it really rubbery on your boat? On our '80 53 the oem material for that purpose appears to be 5200 - it sure looks like it and it definitely acts like it when trying to remove it!

Thanks guys. I have both a white and a black sealant, all 18" or so above any potential water contact. And both feel like a 5200 type rubber. Nothing that feels like a silicone. But these applications are so thick that I would have expected the stuff to sag before curing if it was a 5200. Maybe Thiokol as I remember it being more viscous.
