Does anyone know what size and how many engine zincs I will need for my 12 71TIs? I know that my dripless shaft bearing is fitted to one of the locations on the heat exchanger of each engine. So, how many does that leave for me to replace? Also, I have a Kohler 21kw genset that I'm sure will need a new zinc. Any help on that one would be great as well.

Larry,

Just call Steve McPhereson at Sam's Marine. He'll know how many, where they are and he'll sell you new ones.

You can also call DD directly and give them your engine serial numbers. They'll know and will have the zincs too, but cost more than Steve.

It may make a difference what year your engines are and if they still have the old style zincs. There was a type with a hex head brass top that you could get just the zincs to screw in. These have been replaced with the more standard square head top. If you have the square head tops, you can get just the zincs. If you have the hex head tops, you'll probably have to replace the tops too so you'll have the square head type.

My 8V71TI's have 3 zincs on the engine. One at the raw water pump, one at the heat exchanger inlet and one at the heat exchanger outlet. To check the old zincs, rap them sharply against something hard like a cement dock. If they break, they're shot. If they're 1/3 eaten away, they're shot.
