  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' DOUBLE CABIN (1962 - 1965)
I own a 41 DC with 653 engines, rebuilt 5 yrs ago, with approx 450 hrs since rebuilding.

Last summer I noticed a temp. variation on stbd. engine. At rpm range 1600-1850 rpm, the temp range is in the 175-180 range. At 2300+ rpm, the temp is showing 180-190.

What could be the cause of the increase in temp. ? Is this dangerous at this temp. range?

Thanks for looking

martin

Are these 6V53 naturals or turbo?

I don't know about the 6v53 but 180-190 at 2300rpm (assuming that s the rated rom on a 6v53) is fine. Now if it keeps creeping beyond 190-195 then yes you need to look into it starting with the basic... impeller, clean the raw water side,etc...

Pascal is right on. Do not ever ever let them get above 195 deg. Not even for a minute.

My 6V53 naturals are regulated at 180. Is this a new condition, or has one engine always differed from the other? If a new condition, I would first check the raw water strainer, if it's unobstructed, service the raw water pump, if it's OK inspect/clean the heat exchanger, if OK test/replace the thermostats (there are two - one on the front end of each exhaust manifold).
