  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' TWIN CABIN (1965 - 1971)
Unfortunately I have to replace my starboard engine and it has to be removed. I have a new block and crank but I'm looking for anyone who had has to do this on a 1969 or similar twin cabin.
Can it be stripped and fit through a window or up the stairs to the aft deck? I hope I don't have to resort to cutting a hole in the salon ceiling. Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

cant answer the question without the engine model.
what i can say is cutting a hole in the salon ceiling is not as bad as it sounds, at least with my boat.

the headliner can be peeled back and re-installed without any special tools.
glassing the piece you cut out isnt that bad either.
mine was situated under the rug on the bridge so the glasswork didnt have to be mirror like.
doing it enables you to do the work without standing on your head and test before it goes back in the boat.

Thanks Jim, The engines are 8-53 Detroit's, and my mechanic said it would be a lot cheaper, labor wise, if
he could remove the engine without a total disassembly and rebuild it at his shop then reinstall it back through the cut out. The engines are under my salon and the hole would be forward of my windshield. Sounds to me like the best solution.

I had a 46 Bertram MY that had a factory hatch screwed down over the engine room. Only real work east headliner. All else was easy peasy.
