  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
I was running the engines up to cruise(1900) when the starboard engine lost power and began to blow massive amounts of black smoke. I backed out and the smoke quit and all gauges were good. I checked the engine room and nothing out of the ordinary. I tried to power again and more black smoke. I shut it down and checked filters for water and only an oz or 2 in the 1st Racor and nothing but fuel in the next 2. I left the engine off and came in on 1 engine. The next morning I started it, no odd sounds and idles fine but black smoke under minimal load.

I am thinking maybe a injector problem? Is there anything else that could load up an engine like that?

your turbo could also be the culprit...

Sticking turbo, or that device that opens the rack as the turbo boost comes up, whatever it is called.

siezed turbo would most likely be the cause, how many hours on them? That much black smoke is caused by a lack of air, if it starts up and idles ok, it is not the blower. If you have "siezed" a turbo, you are very lucky indeed, since they usually grenade when they get this worn out. Unless you sucked something in and jammed it.

Seized turbo, blown hose off the turbo, or a massive airleak in the induction side after the turbocharger are the most likely culprits here.

I forgot the obvious, but Karl brought it up, check the simple stuff first, like a blown hose.

Sounds like a turbo. Also be sure to find the cause if your turbo has failed suddenly (and not died of old age). Last turbo I lost on old motor was bearing failure caused by a pin hole raw water leak on exhaust - old Cummins 555VTs had water cooled (jacketed) exhaust elbow on the intake side of the blower. Regards, Bob K

Can anyone suggest a mechanic in the Ft. Pierce area as this is likely above my head.

I will check the hoses but beyond that I will likely need help :(

Morgan French (Morgan's Diesel Services) lives in Stuart. He has worked for me for over 20 years, and totally handled Fanfare's repowering in 1993 (engines, transmission, shafts). His cell is (954) 610-4018. He knows what he is doing and has been totally reliable.
