  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
I have a curious situation with my starboard exhaust waterflow. My port waterflow rolls out in a typical manner at idle. My starboard exhaust doesn't roll out in a typical manner. It builds up... bursts out, builds up...bursts out, builds up...bursts out, at idle. Both exhausts' plumbing seem to be the same-straight out. There is no difference between them. Has anyone experienced this? Is this a common issue? Is there a restricken that I'm not aware of? Would appreciate any help!

does your boat list to either side a little, my 58yf does the burst thing on the port side, but not on the starboard unless i stand on the starboard side. it is a build up of water until enough pressure builds up to push it out.

No, my exhaust is above water. It has nothing to do with weight on either side.

When did you last change impellers and rebuild the raw water pumps? If its been a while, you'd be surprised how much the wear plates get worn. It's a cheap and easy fix to replace(or flip)them.

I wouldn't worry about surging, as long as you have good flow and the engines stay cool.

O Sky thats one of those dock side things gotta look right at the fuel dock and the slip NO hickuping allowed. If it were mine I would look for the cause, a problem may be developing.
I had the same problen and had to finally replace the raw watter pump to correct. I was in Hatteras when the thing went out and Covington Fedex me a new one over night. There was credit for the old one.

There is a sag in the exhaust hose some where that lets the water build up. there is a thread on this some where on here. I think its under a bunk or something. Like a sailboat any dip in the exhaust that is lower than the outlet will cause it.
This is what it should look like.
Click on the pic to hear the sweat sounds!

Ditto. There is a low spot in the exhaust.

My 6-71's are putting out 1/2 that amount with new impellers.

Mine do that when I'm low on fuel and water. Are your tanks low?

exaust water surging is not a problem. what you do want is water flow. change out the impellers and you will have two or three years of worry free operation.

ps. post pictures of for YF!

Agreed. My 58YF "sneezes" water every so often when my fuel and water tanks are low. The low tanks allow the aft end of the boat to rise as much as 4-5", not allowing the water to flow freely out of the exhaust. Pressure builds slightly until she "sneezes."

On my 1982 48 MY w. 6-92's, my stb side does that and has forever. No apparent problem so I don't lose sleep over it. BTW, about 7 or 8 years ago, I replaced all 4 mufflers (2 each side) as well as exhaust hose and it made no difference. The raw water pumps have been rebuilt and impellers are replaced from time to time...still no difference. I do have an exhaust system that diverts most of the water out the sides of the boat at over 1000 rpm so I assumed that was the reason. In any event if anyone has any reason to believe it could cause a future problem, please let us all know.

This is probley a stupid reply but just gotta put my mouth in. My thoughts are that the watter pump is pumping at a steady flow so there is a restriction or semi blockage, kinked hose or somthing somewhere causing the watter to bild up and hickup out over and over. It could be the mufflers with the baffles collecting watter between them to a point then kicking it out.
I had 692 -TI they pored watter at iddle the exaust was maybee a fourth full it had side exaust.
I do not belive it is a problem and especially sence you have had the problem as long as you have.
But it is not the way it is supose to be. The watter pump is not pumping the way the watter is coming out. Tim

Walt, I remember you commenting at the Hatteras school Jarrett Bay event when I was at the dock that the flow out of my exhaust didn't look so fast at idle; now maybe I realize you were used to yours "spurting" .

OT: I am going to be spending some time in Jersey on business over the next few months; it would be fun to have a little winter reunion with y'all..

Tim,

You may be correct but all the mufflers are new as are the hoses. I think it's probably a good idea to quote The Legendary Captain Ron .... " Gee Capt Ron, why do these engines use so much oil ? ..Nobody knows swab, it's a mystery". I have had numerous boats with the same affliction regarding exhaust water and to my knowledge it doesn't seem to impact unfavorably on the operation of the engines so as I said before, I won't lose much sleep over it.

George, Let me know when you will be in NJ. I live in Central Jersey and my boat is docked near Sandy Hook. A couple of the other guys from the class we attended with you are nearby as well and it would be fun to get together and bend a few and have some food. Actually I think we have quite a few HOFers nearby.

Walt, will do. I will be spending time in Secaucus (mostly, NYC and up in Park Ridge, so you are plenty handy. Will be up there again first full week of February. I'll PM you/call when I have dates nailed down this coming week.
