43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I have a 1973 43 Motor Yacht and the insulation in the engine compartment is starting to shed like a white powder. Anybody got a fix? Thanks Richard

Take it to Miami and sell it.

There are white and clear primers out there that actually glue and incapsalate the flaky materials. I work for a paint company in California that carries one called Adhesion Plus. Check with PPG or Sherwin Williams in your area to see if they can help. Heat should not effect the finish as long as you have good ventilation.

In an engine room you want a paint that's not going to burn or Gas off poisons when it's tourched.

The primers are water base and most are low to no odor. At least they are in CLEAN AIR California.

Then it can't possibly be any good. :(

X2 on that. California leads the country in useless items that save the environment.

I'd look into replacing it with Soundown. Once the stuff starts to shed it's often more of a pain trying to save it then it's worth. The Soundown will make the boat much quieter.

I cut squares of white Phifertex plus. Then stapled them over the powdery crap you're talking of. 2 or more yrs now and still staying up and looking good. I didn't do entire ER. Just about 5 or six sqaures.

I agree with Jack about the Soundown. About a dozen years ago when I bought my 1982 48 MY I decided that I needed more soundproofing as well as lots of light in the engine room. Soundown helped on both issues. Just remove the quarter round moldings on the underside of all the hatches and the rest of the engine room overhead and replace with Soundown using a combination of adhesive and the special clips sold by Soundown. The biggest job was replacing all the old insulation on the engine room bulkheads. It required working around and under plumbing, wiring etc. In the end it came out very well. When I installed a bunch of 4 ft floresent units with the vapor covers the light just bounced all over the room from the reflection of the silver mylar Soundown surface. Well worth the work even if you only do the overheads.
