  1. CAPTAIN
Hatteras Model
55' CONV -Series I (1979 - 1988)
I have a 1981 55C that was a bank repo and among other things that were "jury rigged" was the electrical system.
Can someone help me by telling me how the electrical system SHOULD be on this vessel? I know it is 32 volt but the previous owner only has one bank (4) 8 volt batteries for the 32 volt (house) system and then one bank of cranking batteries and nothing else! I know there should be at least another bank of 32 volt based on the fact the battery box in front starboard floor is empty and was used as a tool box!
Any help would be appreciated! I have the original blue prints from the factory that show the wiring circuits but doesn't list the numbers/types of batteries themselves.
Thanks!

What are the cranking batteries? Do the engines still have 32V starters? All the 32V Hatts that I've seen have 2 banks of 4 8V batteries. I don't have the 32V system but I'm sure many here will chime in. Was that the boat that was in the middle of an interior refit? Good luck with her and welcome aboard.

Look for the "Important Information" sheets which will have the size and type of batteries that were OEM for your boat amongst many many other things. You can call Hatteras with your HIN and buy copies of these sheets and the manual for your boat, which includes pictures and diagrams.

In the short term, if you don't hear from a fellow 55C owner, give Steve a call at Sam's in NC.

All I have seen have 4 8v Batts that service the port engine and house and another 4 8v batts that start the stbd engine and genset.

give me a call and I will tell you all you want to know about the electrical system on the boat. I worked in Electrical Design when that boat was built. I left my cell home today so call me at 252-728-2690

It sounds like PO put in small golf cart batteries and left one box empty. I have a 1983 55c and am pretty familiar with most systems, if you have any questions call my cell 231-409-6034. Eric "Seahorse"

Hey Eric,
How is the weather out on Beaver Island?

Hi Sky, not enough snow to snowmobile but the harbor is frozen over. It is a great time for getting those neglected projects done in heated storage!Eric

Glad to hear you guys are doing well. Maybe we'll stop by and see you in this summer.

Stop by the Shamrock and ask for me I would love to talk Hatteras. Eric

Eric... are you a year round resident? We really enjoy stopping in at St James for a night between Mac and Fayette. Is that old Steel Clipper sitting in that guys yard outside of town? ws

Bill, Yes i'm full time I own the Shamrock, Beachcomber, Harbour Market, and an Interest in the Beaver Island lodge. Seahorse is our 55C and spends its time on Paradise Bay and the surrounding Islands most of the summer. If you stop in I would love to meet you guys and swap stories buy you a cold one or give you the local tour. Eric

Most excellent!! We just moved from Chicago to Two Rivers Wi and will be enjoying my Roamer 36 up here and will be moving the Hatteras 58 south next fall, I hope!
Stayed on BI right in front of the Shamrock, next to the ferry last time about 88-89. Many fond memories there! We are planning a little jaunt over that way next summer. Look forward to meeting up! ws

Grays reef passage always stresses me out!

Yachtmanbill,
Maybe we should have the next rendezvous at Beaver. Whatdayathink?

I'm planning to head up to Sault Ste Marie next summer, so Beaver is on the way up or back. I'd love to stop there and see some other HOFers.

Let me know if I can help facilitate a B.I. rendevous of HOF's. Hope to see you guys next summer, the invites open. Eric

HOFs and ROAMERS ! Sounds like a plan Stan!! ws

Sky, that is an excellent idea! As long as Doug doesnt mind if we use this forum and bring the Roamer instead?

I will get a thread started in the everything else section right a way!! ppat

Buy a couple of the Hatteras check style badges and put them on. The ex spurts will believe it was prototype hull # 3 if you sell it right.
