Do I use the same hydrometer to test the cells on 6, 8 and 12 volt batteries? I've got about 60 cells to check so I would like to get it right first time. Thanx in advance!

If all lead-acid, yes.

Ted

The hydrometer measures the sulfuric acid in solution in each cell. 12 V batteries have 6 cells. 8 Volt batteries have 4

Each cell when fully charged is a bit below 2.2 volts The measurement on the hydrometer is specific gravity. The higher the number the better charged it is.

One thing to keep in mind is that the cells need to be consistent. 1 bad cell makes the battery bad.

Thanx guys. I'll check all the cells and then probably have to figure out how to equalize my massive pile of lead! I don't know of any problems yet but all of my batteries have been sittting on auto chargers for a few years and I question their longevity.

Craig,
Your battery charger should have an equalizing feature. MY Zantrex TC-40+ does. All I have to do is use a toothpick to press the recessed "equalize button " and it automatically turns off after 6 hrs.
