  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
43' MOTOR YACHT (1984 - 1987)
I noticed some water coming out the caps of the starting batteries. They are less that two years old. I have a dedicated charger that I normally keep on. The last couple weeks I noticed the water I thought the charge was over charging the batteries so I turned the charger off. Now I come back to the boat today and still water coming out the caps. The meter read 12.7V which is pretty high because the charger has been off. The combination switch combining the house bank if off so they are isolated. I can even here a little sizzling coming from the caps indicating they are off gain or whatever you call it. Do ya'll have any ideas what us causing this occurrence?

Pull the terminals and let them sit. Then measure the voltage.

12.7 is not out of range. The bubbling may be sulphites breaking down or temp related.

Have they been using water?
Is the level low ?

The water was a little low. Not below the plates though. I didnt have time to disconnect the batteries and then check the voltage. We made a 5 hour trip yesterday and I guess the alternators charged the batteries along the way. Today I added water and started the charger and it charged a few hours and kept charging at 10 amps. We are not at the boat now so I turned the charger off not too over charge the batteries. I dont trust that Xantrex.

Xantrex is Chinese for screw you dumb American.

I seem to replace more Xantrex gear than any other manufacturers.

Do not feel pregnant.. I just purchased a 24 volt 100 amp mastervolt 2400$. when i switched from shore to gen it would cut off had to go in the engine room to cut back on. I called mastervolt. They sent me a wall mounted part i have to wire in and program with my lap top. A sack of bull.

I have noticed that our battery voltage is higher when underway. Pate you have a DC panel with a meter correct? Check it when underway vs. when the batteries are at float voltage.

P.S. I have never found a reference to Xantrex being Asian. I believe they were bought out by Schneider some years ago, and they are French. If someone has a link regarding the corporate HQ and manufacturing I'd like to see it. I've heard this about Xantrex many times on this site but never seen it backed up.

After our latest 400nm adventure I had to add distilled water to the batteries. Normally they go quite a while without an addition while sitting at float driven by the charger.

And you have a buddy that sells victron. Oops.

Oops now i feel pregnant!!!

And I usually pre program the chargers before shipping just to make it easy.

I am a fan of the control panels though. Makes monitoring easy.

I was looking at the control panel looked like it did not do much just showed charge level does it do more. Hate to ask how much. You can pm me. Tim

Don't know. I'm not a mastervolt dealer. Victron is my favorite line
