Hey all, just a reminder to remember to put on that sunblock...as I have forgotten several (many) times to put it on myself...and now I am going to have to get a couple of "precancerous" sun spots frozen off my face next week..Ouches!!! Moving from NJ and NC and now to Fl..we are finding that the sun is so much stronger and we need to protect ourselves even more!

Have a great weekend!

Cheers, Laurie & Jim

Interestingly, there are now studies that show contradictory evidence re sunblocks and skin cancer. One study indicated that the use of a sunblock prevents the body from developing vitamin D which can make a person more prone to skin cancers. That study suggested that the best approach to sun exposure was what everyone knew for the last 10,000 years or so - gradual exposure to build up a tan/resistance.

HOWEVER, wrinkling due to sun exposure is a DIFFERENT issue and the studies about this are not arguing that effect of the sun at all. But being wrinkled is not a health issue...

I have no idea which approach is correct but I do find it fascinating that we constantly come up with new medical "facts" about health, foods, whatever that a couple of years later are then reversed. Seems like we always come back to the old recommendation to do things/eat things/drink things "in moderation" and it's fine...

Anything worth doing is worth doing to Excess. Be young, Be foolish, and be happy. Things I learned in college; but, moderation now has an increasing appeal.

A friend of mine died last month from skin cancer at 59. He spent a large part of his life doing just what he wanted which usually involved sailing in neat places. Melanoma is serious, and I share Mike's concerns regarding sunblock, though is has a certain ritual to it and is nice to have someone rub it on you.

The sun does feel good. Perhaps alternate exposure and use of light comfortable, pajama like clothing would be worthy of consideration.

After 40 + yrs. in the Skindr. business I feel qualified to ad my comments. The effects of sun exposure are additive. The damage that occurs , even from small exposures, is remembered by the cells and held in check until a final dose which breaks the camel's back and allows cancer to take over. Melanoma is the #1 killer among cancers especially among people who occasionally get burned while on yearly vacations. While sun is one source of vit.D there are many others that don't run the risk of developing a deadly cancer later in life. Until something better comes along, always wear sunblock of at least 15,seek shade whenever possible, Hats with at least 3" brims and protective canvas and clothes on the boat helps. Any "sore" or dark spot present for 3mos or longer should be seen by a Dermatologist. Thanx for your consideration.

the healthcare industry is just like yards, mechanics and other businesses... there are good and not so good apples.

beware of the $$$ hungry clinics that scare you into removing whatever shows on your skin using the C word as scare tactics.

So much health advice is such Cr@p. Example - Humans ate eggs since the beginning of time. They were "good for you." 15-20 years ago - maybe less, I can't recall - eggs were suddenly one of the worst things you could eat. Studies "proved" it. Now...OOPS, that was wrong, they're fine.

Sure, there are folks that due to allergies, medical conditions, etc that need to avoid certain foods or activities or overexposure to the sun etc.

There are current studies showing that kids get sick and allergies a lot more now than they did years ago because parents overprotect them from everything, including getting dirty playing outside so they are never exposed to the normal germs around us. Antibacterial soap (I thought all soap was inherently anti-bacterial by it's nature) multiple times a day. Absurd!

As I tell everyone now since I have FINALLY figured it out on my own...DON"T believe ANYBODY who is trying to sell you something without doing independent research. I'll relate it to my engine building days because it's the same: don't believe a dyno test that the maker of the product he's trying to sell shows you. At best it's incomplete information; at worst, it's a lie.

Use zinc oxide ointment, better than sunblock and less expensive. Works way better also. Just ignore the color.

The answer is in front of you

Stay in a dark bar and drink!

My doc just put me on vitamin D pills from lack of sun. Of course, here in Seattle, it only comes out a couple times a year. Wonder what my grandchildren will go through because of all the sunscreen they're forced to wear. Which is worse: rickets or cancer?
