  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
52' CONVERTIBLE (1983 - 1990)
i JUST SPENT ALMOST TWO WEEKS ON AND OFF CLEANING THE BILGE. I took a little joy ride and the port transmission filter a spin on leaked and sprayed oil every where 360 degrese what a mess. We are planing to leave Morehead City N.C. and go to Beauford S.C. for the Christmas Holidays So i had changed the oils all of them.
Any one have a idear or a goog number for tork on the filters or is there one. Will filter brand make a diffrence??
I thought WICKS made just about all of them. I purchased oem ones you know the white ones with DD all over them.
flustrated and came home.

I can feel for you on that one, the Detroit spin ons are finicky, I have 4 of them and one usually seeps a bit on being changed, I have to monitor closely for the first trip, it may not be the filter, rather the spin on adapter itself, took me two tries on initial install to get them really tightly seated.

The usual procedure for spin-on engine oil filters is snug it up then give it another 3/4 turn. That may not be enough for the high transmission pressures. I'm using canister filters on the transmissions. The canister filter bolt needs 60-65 ft lb and I rarely got it right until I bought a torque wrench. No leaks since. Does the spin-on have a torque recommendation?

I do not recall seeing a tork number but i still have 2 more so i will look both on the filter and the box Tim

Oil is good it keeps stuff from rusting.

Yeah, like your fiberglass bilge is going to rust. Why doesn't the oil ever get on the things that might rust.....where it would do some good.

It's your fault for cleaning the bilge. If you didn't clean it the filter would not have leaked. Everyone knows that.

Like when you just polished your exterior glass and the boat washer next door gives you a nice fine spray job.

I had a leak I couldn't seem to correct several years ago. Turned out it was leaking not from the filter, but from the gasket between the spin-on base and the original cannister mounting surface.

I changed the oil and filter on our merc big block. Started it up from the helm and lifted the hatch to see oil spraying everywhere.
It turned out the old seal stuck onto the mount so I had two seals installed. The old one promptly blew out and made a mess of things. But it did leave a nice coat of oil on most of the engine. :p

That was almost as much fun as kicking over a crap can for the detroits.
