  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' YACHT FISHERMAN (1970 - 1981)
I have been having sporadic problems with my Outback 3232 inverter/charger (32V) and was disappointed to learn from Outback that this unit has been discontinued. They do not have a replacement unit and repairs offered will be dependent upon the serial number (whatever that means). I'm not finding another 32V model and now considering moving to a 24V system on the house bank side of my electrical. Any suggestions or thoughts?

I have a new sterling 32v waiting for installation and analytics also has 32v chargers.

It's a problem.

I had no inverter and a dying 32V Sentry charger. Plus I had the Port bank go bad. So I replaced that bank and the charger https://ladykay.blog/dc-electrical/ . I installed a Newmar 32 to 24V converter. 50A peak/40A continuous at 24V is a hair under 1000W. It JUST does the minimum I need it to do.

My plan is to convert the starboard side to 24V, install a large bank (LiFePO4 ???) and a larger 24V inverter. Some will come on and preach the separate inverter bank as a must, but I have 17 batteries as it is and not a lot of space left. The SB 32V bank is large and all it does is start the engine.....

I heard you can get a 36 volt Outback inverter and set it to handle 32v. Might be worth a call to tech support.

Also shows discontinued.

But I THANK YOU. I have been noticing that electronics have been increasing their ranges on various parameters. But the lightbulb JUST went off...... There's a plethora of inverters out there with these high tolerances. For example this guy shows input voltage 30-45V Duh...... For the money worth trying.

ere's a larger one. Not quite as cheap.

Hatteras may have been owned by a bunch of companies over the years but Tandy was not one of them.

First off non marine inverters are not a good idea.

Second. An inverter/charger will outperform separate pieces unless they integrate.

Third. And most importantly don't screw around with electricity. Don't take chances with peoples life's.

A properly installed inverter system is part of the ships bonded electrical system. Most I install are in line with switching grounds per ABYC and UL.

If anything were to happen on a boat with a non marine inverter it's possible the insurance company will not cover the damage or injuries. Is it worth the risk?

a non marine inverter is less than ideal as it doesn’t bond N to G when operating... an ABYC recommendation

But critically, that cheap inverter is made in china !!! Who in their right mind would install a chinese made inverter or charger on their boats!!

Where’s your phone made? More than likely the ‘made is USA’ doesn’t mean the parts necessarily were.

Don't confuse him with the facts. It's a popular platitude in certain circles and to be used at every opportunity, real or perceived. And everyone knows it's a fact.

Manufacturers in China will make your stuff to whatever you spec. So yes most of the trash comes from there but most of the high end stuff sold here is also, at least in part, made there. And "Made in Amuhrica" is a very muhrky subject.

To get back to the point, some inverters do and some don't bond neutral and ground. It's in the instructions. I believe most do now.

In many cases we don’t have a choice, as with phones but when we do, I ll pick something not made in China and preferably made in the US

Now if you guys think a non marine inverter in the wrong voltage that sells 5 time cheaper than a quality marine unit is a good idea? Go ahead... I just hope your boat isn’t next to mine but it goes up in flame

Except where they can and will cut corners in the absence of oversight and quality control by their customer. That #6 wire becomes a #12 wire once it disappears into a conduit where the end user doesn't notice - unless they check.

Aims does not list marine as a market. I'd be careful.

And the better brands spend the time (and money) to have their peeps on site to keep an eye on the manufacturing process. I know a few.

I wouldn't have an issue with "made in china", but the marine inverters we have been used to are about a lot more than just inverting. They are high amp chargers as well, had pass through and could be stacked for 240v. Plus, since they were integrated, they didn't require a lot of complicated switching and have fancy remote interfaces.

Anyways, what are you guys using to charge your bank back up with and how many watts have you been able to utilize before charging? Our (8v71) alternators are rated at 50 amp (not sure what they produce at the speeds most of us cruise at), how much does this help while under power?

I noticed the unit mentioned had 25A output, which would be enough. Assume the fridge is on all the time, maybe a TV, that leaves enough for the microwave. I guess you could integrate a third party monitor to keep an eye on load.

I just pulled out a Jabsco fresh water pump, HD6 24 v 6 gpm 60 psi. I installed it 4 months ago.

Pressure switch failed... big surprise; the pump has a “made in China” label... but it s ok, I m sure Jabsco specified high quality parts on that $290 pump.

And has a Jabsco representative stationed at the factory.:)

Made in china phobia is kind of dated. You still have to filter though, using online reviews.
