  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
61' MOTOR YACHT (1980 - 1985)
We are about to buy a 10'-12' RIB and refix / repositioning old aft flybridge deck pad eyes and deck cradles.

When we got the boat the original cradles were bow stern with 25hp motor, but motor overhanged the cockpit and visually not a good look as you climbed the cockpit stairs.

Would there be any issue about mounting the dinghy port - starboard? apart from increased roll? Issues with davit?

+++++

Also we are about to service the Marquipt Davit and replasce the cable. What is the thickness / load of Dyneema rope required for a 450lb dinghy? Anyone have an idea what length?

Thanks.

I’ve never seen one mounted for an aft. Every Hatteras I’ve ever seen has them mounted Port to Starboard.

Here is a screeen snip of the RIB bow stern taken in 2011 before boat left USA.

Does anyone know about dyneema for the davit?

I almost bought a 1989 63’ and it was port to starboard as well.

Thanks for the input. Boat is being slipped for antifoul tomorrow and a few shipwright things which include repositioning the old dinghy cradles. You will see in the photo one of the cradles bow stern.

I've just been up to the flybrdge deck and it will take a 12'-13' RIB port-starboard. Would you position the dingy in front of or behind the davit? Bow to pprt or starboard?

The liferaft and solar panel will move as required.

Personally I’d put it forward.

We have 60MY with a 14’ RIB. We lifted the tender and played with the position of the chocks until we found a good spot. Make sure the motor is tilted to the position it’s sits with the cover on as well.

Scott, as to the Dynema, your winch will probably require a diameter of line that is way stronger than you will ever need. That stuff is really strong even in very small diameters.

Scott, I went with Dyneema after replacing my winch a few years back. I am very pleased with it. It is incredibly strong and soft on the hands. You never have to worry about broken wires sticking you in the hands. I am lifting a BW 15" plus a 50 hp Merc so a least 1000 lbs. The only downside as I understand is the line does not like the ultraviolet sun light. The only line I have exposed is about 2 feet from the crane end to the deck. I cut a slot in a "pool noodle" and slide it over the exposed line for protection. The Dyneema is also much quieter, no more hair raising popping and cracking noise.
It is more expensive but a nice upgrade.

I use Amsteel, same type line different manufacturer. I buy an extra 25' and cut off the length that is exposed to the UV each year. I wouldn't want to have a 700 # RIB land in the cockpit.

What diameter line do you guys use?

Boat is now at shipwrights. Dinghy will sit port to starboard. Would you put motor end of 10’-12’ dinghy to starboard side or port side? Davit is on starboard side.

I would put the motor close to the davit as the balance point will be towards the stern of the dinghy .

I use 1/4", if my memory is any good, it is 7,700 pound working load. Me RIB is 700 pounds.

Thanks, that should work, I have a 13 ft Boston Whaler, also about 700# . Is a couple of wraps around the drum enough to stop slippage?
