I'm going to look at a 10' Apex console type inflatable dinghy with a 40. Seems like a lot of hp for a boat that size. Anybody have any experience with the Apex brand? And what do you think about that much power?

My grandfather always said, buy as much horsepower as you can afford, and the maximum that the vessel or vehicle that you’re putting it into is rated for.

I had a 10’ apex with a 15 hp. It was plenty for be. If the boats transom, the hoist and your wallet can support it, I’d go with it. If not a 20 to 30 might be a good option.

40hp seems like a lot for such a little dinghy. Tiller or console? If console, hydraulic or cable? If cable the feedback must be pretty bad.

Good point Pascal, our Gala 14’ has a 50hp Evinrude that had cable steering. You couldn’t let go of the wheel at almost any speed without the motor going hard over no matter the skeg adjustment. It was so dangerous I installed a SeaStar hydraulic steering system. Almost like it has cruise control now.

Had the same issue with a new Walker Bay 15 and 75hp on the boat I run. Also installed Seastar. Problem solved although it required cutting fiberglass to fit the cylinder

Thanks guys. I decided against it. Seller admitted that he had to put sand bags in the bow when running it solo. High hp worried me too
